Akbay
Once upon a time, there was a wealthy man named Serikbay who had a single son named Akbay. Akbay traveled through the lands, searching for a beautiful girl suitable for him, but he could not find one. While wandering, he heard about a rich man's daughter who was celebrating a wedding with thirty days of games and forty days of feasting in a certain land. Akbay took forty young men with him and traveled for fifteen days to reach the land where the wedding was taking place. At this wedding, there was also a wealthy man named Bibisara, who had forty girls and had set up forty white yurts in a grand manner. As a guest from afar, Akbay and his companions were accommodated in one of these yurts. After two days, having gotten to know the girls, Akbay asked Bibisara, "Are you free?" Bibisara replied, "Since I came into this world, I have had a condition set for myself. I will marry the man who fulfills that condition completely. Even if many come to take me, they will not be able to fulfill my condition." Then Akbay said, "Please tell me your condition; I would like to try my luck!" The girl responded, "You are just a guest who has come once; it would be shameful if you cannot fulfill my condition. It would be better for you to leave as a guest who came to the feast without hearing it." Akbay insisted, "Do not think that way, Bibisara. You wouldn't set a condition that does not exist in the world; please tell me your condition." Bibisara replied, "I am not someone who lacks knowledge; I do not set conditions that do not exist. Here is my condition: whoever wants to marry me must bring eighty yellow, eighty bay, eighty gray, eighty chestnut, and eighty spotted horses, all four hundred horses must be five years old and equal in height and appearance to my bride price. I will not call the person who fulfills this condition a noble or a slave; I will marry him," she said. Akbay decided to fulfill the girl's condition, took permission for three months, and returned to his homeland with his forty companions. In three months, Akbay managed to find the types, colors, and ages of the horses that Bibisara had mentioned, and he returned to the girl's village with forty young men. Upon arriving, he stayed as a guest in the girl's village for seven days. The girl's father could not find any fault with the horses Akbay had brought and welcomed the guest with great hospitality, agreeing to give his daughter to Akbay after a year, and sent him back to his homeland with his forty companions. After a year had passed, Akbay prepared the necessary items for the wedding and set out for the girl's land with his forty young men. When they were a day's journey away from the girl's village, he told his companions, "You can come slowly; I will reach the girl's yurt today," and he rode ahead on his gray horse. Before dawn, when Akbay entered the yurt where the girl was sleeping, he found Bibisara lying with a slave named Qodar, who was the chief of the horse herders. Seeing this, Akbay began to retreat, but the girl threw a handful of dirt in his face. The girl was a sorceress who knew the languages of seven nations. Akbay transformed into a large black dog. Although he looked like a dog, his mind remained intact, but he could not speak; if he tried to speak, he would bark like a dog. As forty young men were coming, a dog appeared in front of them and kept barking, but no one paid attention. Thus, the young men arrived at the girl's village. They found that Akbay was missing. They saw the gray horse tied outside the girl's yurt. When they inquired, no one in the village had seen or heard of Akbay. The dog did not leave the young men; it followed them into the house, went outside with them, and kept barking. Not understanding this, the young men said, "This dog seems to be in distress; let's kill it." Sensing this, Akbay fled from his companions and wandered off. While wandering, the dog encountered a caravan. One of the caravan drivers said, "This is a good dog," and took it in, making a pit in the ground and pouring leftover food into it, but the dog would not eat. However, if the food was placed on a plate, it would eat. The young man was surprised and made a bowl for the dog from one of his plates, feeding it their food and taking it home with him. At that time, a neighbor woman living next to the young man's house was pregnant and had been in labor for three days without being able to give birth. Her husband gathered the local religious leaders to perform a healing ritual, but it did not help, and the woman was on the verge of death. Sensing this, the dog entered the house where the woman was in labor and barked three times around her. When the woman opened her eyes and regained consciousness, she gave birth. Both the woman and the baby survived. This news quickly spread throughout the land, and sick people began to pay the dog’s owner to have their ailments treated by the dog. The once poor young man became wealthy and joined the ranks of the people, no longer viewing the dog as an ordinary dog but as a blessing that had come to him. He laid a felt mat for it to sit on and served it clean food, taking care of it like a human. One day, Akbay thought to himself, "What is this life I am living? There is a saying: 'The dog stays where it is fed.' Although I look like a dog, my mind is not that of a dog. My thoughts are still those of a human from my healthy days. Therefore, this life of mine must be unreasonable. I should at least get some news from Bibisara's village," he decided. At night, the dog stood up and headed towards the girl's village. After walking for three days and nights, Akbay came across the white yurt that was set up. When he arrived at the yurt, he saw ten young men eating. The hungry dog, having not eaten for three days, looked in through the door, wagging its tail, hoping for something to be given to it. The woman serving food glanced at the dog and said, "Isn't this Akbay? My sister was mischievous. She must have cast a spell on him," and she took some food outside, bringing it to the dog. "Are you not Akbay?" she asked. The dog could not speak but indicated with its eyes. The woman sensed that the dog was indeed Akbay, took it to the barn, and fed it, saying, "I will read to you for seven days, and then you will return to your former human form. Bibisara is my older sister. She is much stronger than me in knowledge. However, while I can write the first prayer of my sister, no one can write the second prayer because she possesses a sacred ring." Thus, the woman read to Akbay for seven days, restoring him to his human form. Afterward, she introduced him to her husband, saying, "This is your brother-in-law; I healed him after reading to him for seven days." Then she dressed Akbay well, put him on a horse, and gave him a handful of dirt, saying, "Now go quickly and throw it in Bibisara's face before dawn. If you do not act before Bibisara, you will not be able to return." After three days, at dawn, Akbay entered the girl's yurt, where Bibisara was awake. Before Akbay could throw the handful of dirt, she threw it at him first. Akbay turned into a little gray sparrow and flew away. While flying around inside the house, he barely managed to escape through the door. Realizing he could not stay there, Akbay flew to another land. Upon reaching the edge of a land, he landed and began to eat seeds from the ground, but one day he fell into a trap set by children. The children tied a string to his foot and began to play with him. While this was happening, a woman came to the children and said, "Give me that little gray sparrow; I have been ill, and sparrow meat is a cure for me," and she took the sparrow from the children. This sparrow was Akbay. The woman was Bibisara's youngest sister. She had heard about the mischief of her older sister and how it had affected someone. "Now, if you go to Bibisara, you cannot go in human form. Otherwise, she will transform you again. There is a sacred ring hidden under Bibisara's right braid; if you can sneak in unnoticed in your sparrow form and get that ring, you will achieve what you desire," said the woman. Thus, she took care of the sparrow Akbay for seven days, sharing her wisdom and her sister's secret, and then released him. As he flew away, she advised him, "Do not go to Bibisara during the day; go at night, or she will recognize you." Following his previous habit, Akbay arrived at the girl's yurt before dawn. When he got there, Bibisara and Qodar were lying together again. However, both were in a deep sleep. Akbay quietly took the sacred ring hidden under the girl's braid and thought to himself, "If I turn them into some kind of beast, they will not be able to separate from each other; they must be different." He sprinkled a handful of dirt over Qodar, saying, "Be a wild boar," and over the girl, saying, "Be a female dog." Qodar turned into a boar, and Bibisara turned into a female dog. Akbay took Qodar's gun, shot the whimpering Bibisara first, and then shot Qodar in a vital spot, leaving him to die in agony. Anyone who saw the half-dead boar would strike it, and it too would eventually die in misery. Thus, Akbay returned to his human form and went to his father-in-law. His father-in-law hosted Akbay for three days but had no news of his daughter. He intended to return Akbay's livestock. Then Akbay said, "I do not need livestock; please prepare me food for six months, give me the yurt of your daughter, and provide me with six people to help me settle wherever I wish." Bibisara's father, unable to find any fault with Akbay, prepared a year's worth of food for him, loaded six camels, and sent him back to his homeland with six people. After several days of travel, when they reached the mountains, Akbay unloaded his belongings and set up his yurt by a spring at the foot of the mountain. He gave permission to the young men he had brought with him to return to their homes. Akbay, having turned away from the world and people, continued to hunt in the mountains. After three months, while hunting, he lost the sacred ring he had received from Bibisara. He searched for it for several days but could not find it. "For the sake of a girl, I turned away from my people, my relatives, and my parents; I have endured every humiliation and suffering—killing a man, and in the end, I had obtained something sacred, and now I have lost that too. What remains for me to see in this world!" he lamented, embracing the earth, saying, "Now my only companion and resting place is you." Day and night, he mourned, expressing his sorrow in the following verses: The heart of the wealthy is content, There is no joy in wealth gathered without labor. I brought four hundred horses of five kinds, Yet I did not have Bibisara by my side. My father's ill-gotten wealth has come to an end, I have not seen the joy of the unfaithful. I became a dog, a black hound, a little gray sparrow, You made me suffer without letting me catch you, oh world. I was called "Lord Akbay" at sixteen, There was no one like me in beauty. I drove my father's ill-gotten wealth, Yet I did not get the one I loved. I lie alone in the wilderness, watching the mountains, There is no companion to entertain me. Our life will pass like this, I have left my people alone, with no news of me. Parents, who gave me your pure milk, be pleased, I can no longer see the face of my people. I am neither a beast nor a human, I remain alone, I have lost the ring given to me by the sorceress. Akbay would repeat this poem three times every day. In that mountain, there was a hunter named Surmergen who hunted animals. Surmergen would go on a journey to the mountains and would not return home for three months. One day, while hunting, Surmergen saw three deer running away. He shot the largest deer. After skinning it, he began to roast its liver over the fire. At that moment, a piece of meat that had been stuck to the spit flew off and landed on the meat he had placed in a bag. Suddenly, the deer came back to life, shook itself, and ran away. The other two deer that were nearby also joined it and ran off. Surmergen, angry, prepared to reload his gun to shoot again, but it would not fire. When he took off the hood of his falcon to send it after the deer, the bird did not fly away but returned to his hand. Frustrated with his gun and bird, Surmergen decided to chase them on horseback, but his horse would not move, standing frozen in place. Then the deer he had shot turned around and said: "Surmergen, now you should give up your worldly desires. At the foot of the mountain behind you, there is a white yurt by a spring. Inside it lies Akbay, the only son of a wealthy man. Go and meet him; he will explain the situation to you. Your remaining life will be spent with that young man," it said. After that, the three deer joined together and sang three verses for Surmergen: "Surmergen, you have encountered three deer, Hearing this news, may your heart be at peace. We were harmless creatures wandering around, May the essence of the three deer be revealed to you. Akbay will come to his senses, Otherwise, how would he know goodness? Let him work diligently with a sincere heart, If he does not love true labor, let him know. We will meet again someday, Say hello to Akbay, may he endure. We have no more words to say, Akbay, let him think of what comes next." After saying these verses, the deer climbed to the highest peak of the mountain. Following the deer's guidance, Surmergen walked along the mountain until he reached the white yurt by the spring. Tying up his horse, he entered the yurt and saw Akbay lying on the ground, groaning. After greeting Surmergen, Akbay said, "I am a soul who has given up on this world and is wishing for death. You seem to be a person still caught up in worldly desires; why have you come here?" Surmergen replied, "I have pursued hunting since I was thirteen. Now I am sixty years old. For bringing death to humans and innocent animals, people have called me 'Surmergen.' After forty-seven years of hunting, today I have encountered an event I have never seen before, and following the guidance of three voiceless deer, I have come to you," he said, recounting the events he had experienced. Then Akbay said, "I have moved to this mountain six months ago. The first three months were pleasant for my life. The last three months have been very difficult. I had a sacred ring in my possession that could fulfill the thoughts of a person, but I lost it while hunting three months ago. I have not encountered such an event in this mountain; I do not know about it. Perhaps it was the deer that found my lost sacred ring," he said. Ignoring the deer's words, Surmergen stayed with Akbay for one day, but when he set out for home in the morning, he could not find his way and ended up returning to Akbay's yurt. Only then did Surmergen remember the deer's words, "Your remaining life will be spent with Akbay," and the three verses. When he recited the three verses, a great thought struck Akbay. "What do they mean by 'Let him work diligently' and 'Let him endure'? Could it be that the three deer were Bibisara herself and her two sisters?" Then Akbay thought, "Wherever I go, there is no joy without labor. I will turn the spring where I am into a garden, so that my time may pass and the place where I stay may flourish." Thus, he began to cultivate a garden. As a result, the spring where Akbay and Surmergen stayed turned into a garden. Even the birds that flew there would not leave without circling around. One day, while sitting under an apple tree by the water's edge, Surmergen and Akbay saw the three deer come to drink water. The deer said: "Surmergen, goodness comes from evil; although you are a human, you have become worse than a wandering beast. Yet, we have not done you any harm. Now that you are on a good path, the day of goodness is near." After the deer left, Akbay and Surmergen went to the spot where the deer had drunk water and noticed a piece of stone with writing on it. When they read the writing, they found it was two verses: "Akbay, why have you come to this world? What has Bibisara not seen on your path? Your fortune is about to open, You have not regarded the world as a companion. The earth has split open, You have made labor your own." "Wait for us here in three days, I will return the ring to you," it was written. Seeing this, they rejoiced, saying, "So there is a dawn for us too," and they waited for the promised three days. At that moment, the deer returned to drink water, saying, "The ring is for you, the garden is for us," and they walked away. Akbay took the ring and asked Surmergen, "Where is your homeland?" Surmergen replied, "My homeland is not far; it is three days' journey from here." After that, the two of them mounted the ring and flew first to Surmergen's homeland, and then to Akbay's homeland. Thus, after fifteen years, Akbay returned to his parents and held a grand wedding. He decided to share his gathered wealth with the poor and the needy. The people called him "generous."
