Boken zhargak (Version I)
Once upon a time, there were two brothers. They lost their father at a young age and lived with their mother. Growing up without worries, the two brothers took up hunting as their profession from a young age. As they grew taller and their muscles began to develop, their hunting skills became impressive. They became so skilled at hunting animals like the gazelle that they wore coats made of gazelle skin and blended in with the wild, shooting whatever they desired. One day, the two brothers set out together, as usual, to hunt gazelles. In the vast steppe, it was known that the gazelles would come to drink water at certain spots. Arriving early at one such spring, the two brothers decided to take up a strategic position for shooting. The elder brother advised the younger, "Let’s position ourselves on either side of the spring. If we shoot the gazelle that comes to drink from both sides, we will have a great catch," he said. The younger brother agreed and took his place as instructed. As noon approached, the sun rose high in the sky, and the heat became unbearable. Suddenly, a gazelle appeared, its antlers glistening, followed closely by a herd of kids. They approached the spring, which sparkled like a bright basin. At that moment, the elder brother thought it was the right time and drew his bow. As the gazelle leaped back, the younger brother also released an arrow from his side, as promised. Many gazelles fell to their arrows. The thrill of the hunt excited the two brothers even more, and they shot eagerly. Thus, a thick cloud of dust rose from the hooves of the gazelles rushing between them. After a while, the surviving gazelles managed to escape through the dust and headed into the wild. Still wanting to shoot a few more gazelles caught in the dust, the two brothers chased after the herd and drew their bows. At one moment, the elder brother thought he saw the silhouette of a gazelle moving through the dust. Without hesitating, the skilled hunter drew back his bowstring and released the arrow. This time, his aim did not miss, and he struck his target. As he rushed to gut the animal, he realized that the gazelle he had shot was none other than his younger brother. Right there, the brother wept as he held his sibling's head, and his lament later spread throughout the land as the song "Gazelle Coat."
