The King's Consolation
Once upon a time, there was a kind-hearted khan for his people. Because he was kind to his people, those around him treated him with respect.
The khan had a single son, who was the embodiment of all his hopes and wishes. However, that only son passed away unexpectedly just as he was coming of age and beginning to ride horses. The untimely death of his only son plunged the khan into deep sorrow, washing away his tears. The khan, whose mind was scattered like sand, was visited by various leaders and eloquent speakers from nearby lands, who came to offer their condolences and comfort him. They urged him to overcome his grief with wisdom and to be patient. But the khan, crushed by sorrow, withered away, unable to lift his head.
At that time, there was a renowned flute player in the land. Hearing of the khan's sorrowful state, he came to the court. While the people bowed and gathered to share in the khan's grief, he thought to himself that he should not remain on the sidelines. Thus, he approached the khan, greeted him, and offered words of consolation. The khan remained silent, not responding to the greeting, consumed by his inner turmoil, and lay there in silence. The flute player did not take the khan's lack of response to heart. He settled down lower, took out his flute from its case, and began to play leisurely. The unheard melodies captured the ears of those listening, enchanting them with its wonderful tunes.
The sound of the flute played on for a long time, wailing and sighing, as if it had turned all the sorrow and grief into music. Finally, the khan lifted his head from the bed, greeted the flute player, and requested him to come up and sit higher.
When the flute player took his place at the front, those watching the khan's demeanor draped a cloak over the musician's shoulders.
Thus, this melody that lifted the khan's sorrow and made him raise his head became known throughout the land as "Khan's Consolation."
