White Irtysh
The branch of the twelve clans of Abak within the Middle Zhuz Kerey is called Jantekey. The Jantekeys are a prosperous people. There is a saying among the people: "If one Jantekey moves, it cannot be contained by the whole Abak-Kerey; if the whole Abak-Kerey moves, it will blend into one Jantekey." This indicates the large number of Jantekeys.
It is said that within this Jantekey community, a feast was held in honor of a respected person. A gathering was announced to take place in a lush valley of a river flowing from the western side of the Black Irtysh.
The appointed day arrives. As is customary for the nomadic people to share joy and sorrow, the feast area fills with white sheep and spotted horses. The yellow kumys from the black sabas, specially brought from each household and village, bubbles and settles side by side on the cool bank of the river.
Of course, there is a tradition that feasts and celebrations do not pass without grievances. At this feast, a man from the Iteli clan, the elder of Abak, becomes angry, saying, "I was not given a special tent." It is true that the elder is traditionally given special respect and precedence over others, and the Iteli man's expectations were not met.
Thus, the burst of anger does not easily subside; the Iteli man, in his rage, tips over the black sabas lined up by the river, spilling all the kumys into the water. The quantity of kumys brought to the feast was so great that the river's channel rose, and white waves splashed. Since then, this mouth of the Black Irtysh has been called the White Irtysh.
One artist who participated in this event composed a kuyi (musical piece) about this incident and named it "White Irtysh."
To this day, the Iteli clan inhabits the Kobda region of the Bayan-Ölgii province of the Mongolian People's Republic, along the banks of the White Irtysh. The Iteli clan is divided into three branches: Akbakty, Küyik, and Besshal. Their battle cries are Bukharbay, Küyik, and Besshal, whose descendants fled to Europe during the turmoil of the 1930s to 1950s. However, a trace of their joyful era remains in their ancestral homeland.
There is another legend about the "White Irtysh" kuyi that is told among the people. According to this legend, the people who relied on livestock for their livelihood would move back and forth along the banks of the White Irtysh, living carefree and without worries. That is, one side of the river served as winter quarters, while the other side was for summer pastures.
One year, spring arrived early, the snow melted suddenly, and the water of the White Irtysh rose, preventing the large population from moving to the summer pastures in time. The area that had been grazed by livestock throughout the winter was forced to be enclosed. That year, the livestock could not gain weight, leading to some losses and a decline in the community's well-being.
To ensure that the people do not forget that the White Irtysh also has its own white-capped waves, an artist composed the "White Irtysh" kuyi.
This kuyi is also referred to as "Irtysh Waves" by some in the community.
