Seven Generations – Erke Aтан
...There was a rich man. He became poor. One day he died. He left behind a little property, a son, and a camel. That camel gave birth to a calf. The son led the calf around, intending to sell it. While he was doing this, the daughter of a rich man came out in front of her house and said:
– Hey, my young man, are you going to sell that calf?
– I will sell it, – said the young man.
So, the girl bought the calf and raised it until it was seven years old. She taught it to speak and understand human language. The girl was knowledgeable. She foresaw that the camel would become sacred as it grew. The camel became very large and was called "the elephant of the camel" by the people, while the girl named it "Erke Atan."
Now, someone came from across the river to propose to the girl. The day to marry her arrived. They planned to have thirty musical performances and celebrate for forty days. The rich man asked the girl:
– My daughter, what should I load onto the camel?
The girl replied:
– Whatever you load, you know best, you are rich. Load it so that your back country grieves, while your front country rejoices, – she said. Then the rich man loaded seven camels. The girl went to her beloved Erke Atan and said:
– Don’t say "I’m being left behind." When I have crossed to the other side of the river, run towards me. Run and catch up. By the time I have crossed, you will also arrive. They will chase after you. They will chase you on a black horse. By the time they reach you, you should have crossed the water, – she said. So, they married the girl off. The seven camels were loaded with gifts, saying, "Let my front country rejoice, let my back country grieve."
When they had gone far, Erke Atan ran away. They chased after it on a black horse.
Erke Atan crossed the water. The black horse reached the water and stopped.
Once Erke Atan safely crossed to the other side of the river, the girl loaded all the gifts onto one Erke Atan, sent the seven camels back across the water, and let them go to her homeland. It is said that the seven camels carried the load alone, while Erke Atan grazed on the grass by the roadside and ran swiftly.
