Баяғыда бір мерген болыпты. Бір күні баласын аңға ертіп шығады. Баласына:
– Сен мына ну тоғай, қалың қурайдың ар жағына өтіп, аң болса бері айда, – дейді.
Бала тапсырманы орындау үшін тонын теріс айналдырып киіп, тоғайды аралап, қалың қурайдың арасымен келе жатқанда, аңдып отырған әкесі «теке екен» деп атып жібереді. Жетіп келсе, баласы өліп жатады.
Сонда: Қалың қурай, сұр теке,
Мені алмадың, қу теке, –
деп зар еңіреп тартқан күйі екен...

Gray goat
Once upon a time, there was a hunter. One day, he took his son with him to hunt. He said to his son:
– You go beyond this dense thicket, through the thick reeds, and if you see any game, drive it this way.
To fulfill the task, the boy turned his coat inside out and wandered through the thicket. While he was walking among the thick reeds, his father, who was waiting, shot, thinking it was a goat. When he reached the spot, he found his son lying dead.
Then he lamented:
Thick reeds, gray goat,
You did not take me, cunning goat, –
and he cried out in sorrow...
