Nurgazaryn Nightingale
Once upon a time, there was a just king named Mahmud. He had three sons named Asan, Usen, and Hasan. One day, Mahmud has a dream in which he sees a marvelous bird. This bird lives in a cage between the earth and the sky, in the city of blue fairies. Dreaming of capturing it, he loses his laughter during the day and his sleep at night. He even abandons his throne and rolls in the dust on the street. Then Asan and Usen set out on a journey to fulfill their father's dream. The youngest, Hasan, also asks to go. Their father reluctantly lets him go. Hasan catches up with his two brothers. As they travel, they come across a fork in the road. There is a stone there, and the inscription on the stone reads: the first line - "if you go, you will return," the second line - "you may or may not return," the third line - "if you go, you will not return." Since Hasan is the youngest, he chooses the third path. First, he arrives at the city of the fairy Gulbahram. There is an old witch who turns Hasan into a deer, but Gulbahram transforms him back into a human, falls in love with him, and they spend fifty days and fifty nights together before sending Hasan on his way with a heavy heart. Years pass, and when he reaches the top of a high mountain, he encounters a giant tree. At the top of the tree, there is a nest of a two-headed Simurgh bird, with chicks lying in it. While resting under the nest, a seven-headed dragon climbs up. Without fear, Hasan sends the seven-headed dragon flying in seven directions and continues to rest peacefully. After a while, the sun is eclipsed, a storm arises, and the tree shakes. It turns out that the Simurgh has flown in and, seeing Hasan, intends to kill him, but the chicks intervene. - "In your absence, the seven-headed dragon would have eaten us; he is the one who killed it," they say. The Simurgh takes Hasan under its wing. After asking about his journey and learning the details, it says: - "Ah, Hasan, your path is long. The bird is in the city of the blue fairy Ghaynijamal, beyond seven rivers. All the fairies, demons, and jinn are there. They only feed on human flesh. You cannot go there; even if you do, you will not return safely. Turn back," it advises. Hasan refuses to turn back. With no other choice, the Simurgh takes the meat of seventy deer and seventy jars of water, carries Hasan on its back, and flies towards the other side of the seven rivers. It crosses each river in ten days. The Simurgh eats one deer a day and drinks one jar of water. On the last day, Hasan takes down a deer and cuts a piece of meat from his own thigh to give to the Simurgh. On the seventieth day, they reach the city of the fairy Ghaynijamal. When they arrive, all the fairies are asleep, including Ghaynijamal. Only the nightingale Nurghazarin is awake. When it sings, flowers fall from its throat. Hasan laments, explaining his situation. To Nurghazarin, he says: - "Come with me to my father; he will die without you. I have endured so much suffering to fulfill my filial duty to my father. Please do not disregard my words." When Nurghazarin sings like a human, honey drips from its tongue, and its wisdom surpasses that of humans, though its body is that of a bird. Its head is made of ruby, its eyes are golden, its chest is silver, its wings are jeweled, its tail is emerald, and each feather sparkles with the light of the sun, captivating the eyes. Nurghazarin tells Hasan: - "Alright. I like you. Just do as I say. First, while Ghaynijamal is asleep, join with her. I will perform your wedding. Put your ring on her, and put her ring on yourself," it instructs. Hasan does as instructed. He takes Nurghazarin and goes to the Simurgh. The Simurgh tells Hasan: - "On the sixty-ninth day, you took down the last deer. What meat did you give me then? It was so sweet, so powerful," it says. Hasan replies: - "I cut it from my own thigh," he says. The Simurgh takes both of them and flies. It brings them to its nest. Upon arrival, it says: - "You have been a good friend to me. You gave me your own flesh. I will give you one of my wings. With this, you will reach your homeland," it says. Hasan takes Nurghazarin and flies. They arrive at the earth fairy Gulbahram. Gulbahram welcomes them warmly and gives him an arrow. - "With this arrow, go and kill the witch who turned you into a deer, or we cannot leave," she says. Hasan goes and shoots the witch without aiming, and the arrow chases her, entering her foot and coming out of her brain. Thus, she dies. Gulbahram turns all the deer roaming outside into humans and gives them speech. They were all brave. They follow Hasan, forming a large army. They head back to their homeland. On the way, they see his two brothers, who are wandering in despair. He rescues them from their suffering. However, on the way, Asan and Usen plot treachery. They push Hasan into a well and cover it with stones before leaving. When they return to their homeland, one day, people fall from the sky. It turns out to be Ghaynijamal and her fairies, demons, and jinn. They meet Mahmud. "Show me the one who stole Nurghazarin," she says. Usen is called. - "How did you take Nurghazarin?" asks the fairy Ghayni. Usen replies: - "I went on horseback, and you were all asleep, so I took her," he says. Asan is called: - "I went on a wind horse, and the fairies were asleep. I took her," he says. Ghaynijamal does not believe them. She tells Nurghazarin to "sing." Usen and Asan do not know that this bird can speak like a human. Nurghazarin sings the entire story from beginning to end. Ghaynijamal beheads Usen and Asan. Realizing that she has become the bride of King Mahmud, she feels ashamed. In one day, she brings Hasan back. On the right side is the earth fairy Gulbahram, on the left side is the blue fairy Ghaynijamal, both of whom Hasan marries. Soon, he sits on the throne offered by his father and becomes a just king. The musician, amazed by Hasan's wisdom, played this tune, saying, "If a son is born, let him be like Hasan."
