The Lonely Young Man (Version II)
Once upon a time, there was a solitary young man who had no relatives or kin. Unable to express the sorrow of his loneliness to anyone, he took to playing the dombra and the sybyzgy, pouring out his inner pain through music.
In the melodies he played, a constant note of lament could be heard, which gradually drew more and more listeners from the village. However, when they asked the young man, “What is this tune?” he would reply, “I don’t know myself,” and would evade the question. Nevertheless, he did not stop playing his music. The villagers continued to come and listen. Eventually, they kept listening to his many nameless tunes and eventually named them “The Tune of the Lonely Young Man” or simply “The Lonely Young Man.”
The villagers spread these sorrowful tunes far and wide. One day, a wealthy man’s daughter, who was fond of music, heard about the young musician and fell in love with him. As time passed, the young man, realizing that the girl was in love with him, found himself drawn to her, not feeling diminished by his solitude. This added another layer of sorrow to his loneliness. Since his solitude prevented him from speaking to the girl and his poverty hindered him from approaching her wealthy father, he transformed this longing into music once again, and from his aching heart, he created a tune called “The Intermediary.”
