Begen
The young man who arrived on a double horse is warmly welcomed by the waiters and led to the yurt. The wealthy man lying in the yurt, upon seeing the young man timidly greeting him from the door, looks him up and down with wide eyes and says in a rasping voice: – Yes, who are you? May you have a safe journey, – he says. – Sir, I am the son of Begen, known to all six tribes, with countless foals, unbranded colts, and countless sheep, – he replies. As soon as Begen's name is mentioned, the wealthy man raises his head in respect, but when the name of the great Begen is mentioned, he suddenly turns to the unfamiliar guest. After the young man ties one horse to the belt and says, "This is a greeting from my father," the wealthy man sets up a separate tent for the young man and waits for several days. The guest is an extraordinary dombra player and has come after hearing about the dombra-playing talent of the wealthy man's daughter. The young man impresses the wealthy man's daughter with his art. However, the cunning girl decides to observe and test him. One day, when the wealthy man's daughter comes to the house where the young man is sleeping, she sees that his feet are sticking out from under the blanket. Noticing the blue marks on his feet from the ropes, she realizes that he is not Begen's son and no longer shows any signs of her previous demeanor. Finally, when the young man prepares to leave, he says to the wealthy man who has come to ask for something: – If my father sees me as worthy, I would like to bring my household, my share, and my maid all at once, and return with the bride price, – he says. The wealthy man, whose attention is drawn to the mention of cattle, thinks of taking half of Beken's countless livestock: – Oh dear, what does that mean? How can I disregard Begen's wishes? I will send my son off properly, with his head and feet intact, so stay for several days, my son, – he says. The suspicious girl keeps whining to her father about her thoughts. The wealthy man, who does not agree with this, eventually gives in and marries off his daughter. According to tradition, the bride's mother accompanies them. After crossing a long distance, the young man says to his bride: – I was an orphan at Begen's door, no matter how much I longed to establish a household, where would I find a bride without a bride price? In the end, I will bring you here with this method, – he tells her the truth. Upon hearing this, the girl orders the caravan leader: – Unload the tent! – she commands. After setting up the tent, the girl takes her dombra and begins to play a haunting melody. Through the language of the music, the young man also understands the girl's inner thoughts. Then the girl expresses her regret through the dombra: I came to Begen, To the wealthy Begen they say. Countless foals, countless sheep, Unbranded colts they say. Farewell, be safe, my father and mother, Farewell, be safe, my aunt and uncle. Now where is the suitable one for me, I will fall into the depths. Now where is the suitable one for me, Now where is the suitable one for me, Giving the girl to wealthy Begen, Drive the bride price in large amounts! – These words are sung. The girl's mother, realizing the truth of the situation, calls for her son-in-law the next day: – Send my regards to Begen, I will send someone next year at this time to collect the bride price! – and turns back midway. The melody played by the girl later became known as "Begen," which made the girl regretful and the wealthy man long for her.
