Shyngyrau (Version II)
Once upon a time, there were two villages named Baybol and Tauasar on either bank of the river Kökjal, which was not easy to cross. After the younger daughter-in-law of Baybol, Gülbike, advised her mother-in-law, she called the village horse herder boy and said: – You, go to Tauasar village; the groom, Azilbek, has not opened the door of this village since he came to visit. If we wait for him to come himself, autumn will come, and it seems we will be on the move. You go and call the groom! – she instructed. The horse herder boy climbed over mountains, crossed stones, and barely made it to Tauasar village. He met Azilbek at the horse tethering spot and privately conveyed the message he was sent with. Azilbek, who was already longing for the news, was delighted and said he would visit his in-laws soon. When Azilbek and his companions arrived at the smaller village of Baybol, it was as if the village was in a festive uproar. The waiters holding horses came out one after another to greet the guests, taking their horses and showing hospitality. Settled in specially arranged houses, the groom and his companions listened to the village men's tunes called "Toy Bastar" and "Küy Basy." Azilbek's talented companions showcased various arts, filling the village with merriment. While they were sitting like this, Azilbek's bride Nazigül also came to the center of the group among a crowd of girls wearing feathered sable hats. The young people's songs and melodies did not cease until sunset. Gülbike had already arranged the evening's entertainment. Those who paired up two by two and playfully chased each other lost track of how the night passed and how the day ended. No one knew how many joyful evenings and interesting days had rolled by. One day, around midday, while having tea, Azilbek leaned towards Gülbike and said: – We should return; it has been several days since we left the village. – Understanding the groom's intention, Gülbike conveyed the guests' request to her elder mother-in-law. After thinking for a long time, the old woman looked intently at Gülbike and said: – They say the water is rising and overflowing the tree tops, children, be careful! – Gülbike began to prepare to send the groom off with his companions. As the saying goes, "There is a tongue beneath the tongue," the jokes that had lasted for several nights came to an end, and the sign of hearts that could not part from each other – embroidered handkerchiefs – passed from hand to hand. At that moment, as they were about to depart, Azilbek's younger sister-in-law came and presented a dombra. This dombra was made from nine different types of wood. When a light breeze touched it, a melodious sound would emerge from its two strings. As they were leaving, when the sister-in-law who had stayed behind turned back to enter the house, she saw Nazigül sitting on her bed and said: "Lie down and rest," laying Nazigül down on her bed and lowering the curtain. As soon as the girl lay on the soft bed, she fell asleep. Suddenly, she woke up, exclaiming "Allah!" Startled, the sister-in-law rushed to her side and asked, "What happened?" The girl replied, looking at her sister-in-law with fear: – I had a terrible dream; in my dream, Azilbek and I were climbing a high peak, and a giant dragon blocked our way. First, it swallowed him, then it swallowed me. That’s why I was scared. While they were talking like this, a loud shout from the direction where Azilbek had left echoed across the entire steppe, startling the village. Hearing this, Nazigül and Gülbike ran outside, and they saw a boy in a white shirt riding Azilbek's horse, Baygator, coming frantically. – Oh, what happened?.. – Azilbek's horse fell in the water... The questions and fragmented answers were not clear to Nazigül. The already faint girl trembled as if engulfed by a terrifying flame and, not realizing what had happened, rushed towards the sand net that was standing by the riverbank. When the villagers came rushing behind her, Sandaltory was tied to a pale willow tree. No one was in sight. Only the wild waves of the river, having drunk blood, were roaring fiercely. The people on both sides of the river mourned the loss of two precious lives. Until sunset, the horsemen and pedestrians searched both banks of the river, but found nothing and became distressed. Finally, they made a raft with seven logs and sent two skilled men to search for them at a place called "Qan Iirim." These two men, following the wild waves, eventually reached the raft that had been smashed against the rocks, clinging to two logs, and arrived at "Qan Iirim." They noticed something fluttering from the eagle's nest in the whirlpool. These two, who could catch a hawk with a fishing line, had never seen such a creature in their lives. They were astonished. To these two artists, a strange vision appeared. While Nazigül, who had thrown Sandalker into the wild current, looked longingly at the turbulent flow, Azilbek appeared from the bloody waves and threw himself into the water. Chasing after the fierce waves, when he reached "Qan Iirim," the dombra he had given to his brother Azilbek circled around the whirlpool and came ashore. The girl broke through the waves, grabbed the dombra, and fainted under the pressure of the wild current, emerging from the eagle's nest. She then stood still, wanting to see the bottom of "Qan Iirim." Nazigül did not hear the two people clinging to the rock saying, "My dear, come here, you will fall." With her furrowed brow, still wet with tears, she bid farewell to her homeland and birthplace, twirled the dombra made from nine types of wood, threw it away, and leaped into the whirlpool. As her red satin dress fluttered like a butterfly and landed on the water's surface, a merciless mysterious force swiftly devoured her! The wind carried the dombra to the shore. After this, the two artists, who had been playing the dombra, thought deeply and played a tune filled with the dreams and misfortunes of lovers called "Shyngyrau." Thus, the "Shyngyrau" tune spread among the people. After this, the former Kökjal River was named the "Shyngyrau River."
