Spotted Horse
Once upon a time, a young man named Mambetali was on his way to visit his maternal uncle's village when he encountered a caravan on the road. Mambetali greeted the elderly leader of the caravan and shared his destination. They were also heading in the same direction. After traveling for a while, a gray mare from the caravan gave birth. The elder then said: – My dear! You were a guest who joined us on the road, and since this mare has given birth in the wild, may it be a gift for you, – and he gave the gray foal to Mambetali. Mambetali wrapped the young foal in his cloak and took it to his uncle's house, where he cared for it for a short time before releasing it back into the herd. After a few years, the horse that Mambetali had been riding fell into a pit and got injured. Now left on foot, Mambetali went to his uncle's horses and tried to lasso a horse of his choice. However, the lasso, which he had known for a long time, kept slipping off the proud bay and kept landing on the neck of the gray. Eventually, Mambetali brought the gray horse home and trained it. He went hunting with Shubar and managed to catch many wolves and foxes. The foal that was born on that road had now become the horse Shubar, and of course, Mambetali did not think of entering it in races, nor did he include it in competitions. One day, there was a celebration in a neighboring village, and Mambetali decided to attend. Seeing the horses that were to race, he thought, "Let me test Shubar as well," and tied Shubar among the racers while he stood aside. A judge came to see the horses participating in the race and said: – The prize for this race will go to that gray horse over there. It is an old horse. It seems like it is saying, "At least I haven't participated in a race in my lifetime." Without torturing that creature, just give it the banner, – he said. The judges, who had previously won first place and were hopeful for this race as well, did not take kindly to the judge's words. The horse handler announced that the horses would be brought out separately for the race and would be released from the starting point the next day. Mambetali had a boy named Esen ride Shubar and sent him into the group. With the morning chill, the horses were released in a line, and Shubar was left behind. As the distance increased, the racers spread apart. After running for a while, Shubar, who was behind, began to warm up and started to stretch its body. Gradually catching up with the horses ahead, it began to move forward. At this point, Esen came to the last horse and asked, "Who is ahead?" – The first ones are Akbakai and Karaker, who just passed, – said the last horse. Upon hearing this, Esen urged Shubar forward. The warmed-up Shubar dashed across the field and quickly caught up with Akbakai and Karaker. After holding back the reins for a while and running alongside them, when the crowd came into view, Shubar surged ahead and began to gallop. Thus, it pulled ahead of Akbakai and Karaker by a considerable distance. The crowd, eagerly waiting for the horses to arrive, saw a lone black horse in the distance and said, "That is Akbakai, who never gives up the lead in races," when suddenly, it turned out to be Shubar. No one believed that Shubar had come in first except for the judge. Especially Akbakai's owner, the judge, insisted: – Shubar did not come from the starting point; it joined the race later, so the prize is mine, – refusing to concede victory. Just then, the horse handler arrived. The crowd surrounded him and asked, "Did you see Shubar at the finish line?" The horse handler replied: – When all the horses left together, Shubar was left behind at the very end, – he said. After this, the judges had no choice but to accept Shubar's victory. Mambetali took the prize and gave it to Esen, then returned home. The people gathered for Shubar's race were pleased. Especially, one musician present at the gathering was so impressed with Shubar that he composed a tune called "Shubar Horse," saying, "One horse of the black is worth a thousand horses of the judge."
