Telqonyr (Version II)
A wealthy and respected nobleman had a vast herd of horses, among which was a cherished brown stallion. The brown horse was known for its beautiful features: it had ears like reeds, straight hooves, a graceful forehead, sinewy legs, and a large body with long strides. The nobleman tied the swift brown horse to a post, pampered it, and had a caretaker watch over it at night. The stallion was only ridden at grand gatherings where the tribes came together for large celebrations, participating in races. The nobleman, who did not consider any of the melodies composed for horses to be equal to the speed of the brown horse, declared to the entire land: “If there is a bard who can capture the gait of the brown horse in a melody, I will have him lead a camel and mount him, and dress him in fine clothes.” Many musicians, to the best of their ability, tried to compose melodies. However, none of the musicians’ thoughtful compositions pleased the nobleman. Hearing of this legendary event, a nobleman from a neighboring tribe plotted to steal the swift brown horse. He sent a clever young man along with a skilled bard to steal the horse. After a long journey, the two grew weary as they reached the edge of the land but could not achieve their goal. “What’s there to worry about? We’ll take it and return,” they thought, but their hopes were dashed. The brown stallion tied to the post near the nobleman’s palace was guarded day and night. During the day, the caretaker stayed close, and at night, the girls and women guarding the sheep surrounded it. The clever young man and the bard realized after several days that they could not sneak in. The clever young man then shared his plan with the downcast bard. “Why would we find any success here in a foreign land? When the villagers are asleep and the girls are out guarding the sheep, you climb the hill beyond the village and play your dombra. The girls, enchanted by your sweet melodies that tug at their hearts, may come to you. If we are lucky and they surround you, play beautiful tunes. Meanwhile, I will take the unguarded brown horse and lead it away.” They agreed to this plan and separated when the village fell asleep. The girls, waiting for dawn while guarding the sheep and engaging in idle chatter, unexpectedly heard the enchanting sound of the dombra. One after another, the girls, drawn by the continuous melody, hurried to the bard. “I am a young man from the neighboring village. I was waiting for someone, but since I had no luck, I am just conversing with my dombra,” said the bard as he continued to play. Seizing the opportunity, the clever young man quietly approached and led the tied brown stallion away to their destination. “You must have managed to get it by now,” thought the bard, picking up his dombra and setting off after saying goodbye to the girls. When the girls, who had been captivated by the sweet melody, returned, the brown stallion was gone. In the tranquil night, both the nobleman and the villagers were awakened by the girls’ cries of “The brown stallion is gone!” “What happened?” asked the nobleman. The girls recounted the events. “What melody did the bard play?” inquired the nobleman. “The bard played this melody,” said one girl, who had memorized it, and began to play. The melody depicted the horse’s gait and graceful run, captivating the listeners. As the nobleman listened intently, he raised his head when the melody ended and exclaimed loudly: “Was there ever a bard in this land who could play the beauty and speed of the brown horse in such a way?! If there was, where has he been all this time? He is not a bard of this land. I heard there was an exceptionally skilled bard from a nobleman of the neighboring tribe. This is his melody. That nobleman is the one who had the horse stolen. I had asked for it many times, but he refused, it seems he was plotting.” The nobleman sat in sorrow for a while and then called two of his trusted young men. “Mount your horses and go to that nobleman. Take a gold coin as a gift. Deliver my greetings. Do not ask for the brown stallion, and if he offers it, do not accept it,” he instructed. The nobleman welcomed the two young men as honored guests and gladly accepted the nobleman’s gift. When the two young men were about to leave, the nobleman asked if they had any requests, but they replied, “Our nobleman sent his greetings,” and said nothing more. The nobleman, pleased with the nobleman’s respectful gesture despite the loss of the brown stallion, gave them another brown horse that resembled the first and said: “Send my greetings to your nobleman! Since he has forgiven me, I too bow to him. Let these two similar brown horses stand together, giving each other beauty!” Thus, one brown horse returned as two and was tied to the post near the nobleman’s palace. Captivated by the appearance, grace, and speed of the two identical brown horses, the musicians composed the melody “Telqonyr.”
