Bulanzhigit
Bulanzhigit was not a musician at first. He was a determined, spirited young man with the ambition to become a hero and protect his people from enemies. At one time, Abilai Khan gathered warriors to raid the Kalmyks, selecting about two hundred people and holding a council on a hill outside the village. At that moment, Bulanzhigit, around twenty years old, approached Abilai and asked for permission to join this expedition. Abilai granted permission. Shortly after, a young woman, veiled, emerged from the village and approached the group. Seeing her, Abilai sent someone to inquire if she had a complaint to make. Through the messenger, the woman conveyed her message to Abilai: – Tell the Khan: do not send Bulanzhigit on this journey; if he goes, he will not return alive, he will perish. I had a bad dream about him, and he did not heed my warning, – and the woman left. She was Bulanzhigit's bride from that year. After the messenger relayed her message, Abilai told Bulanzhigit: – You should not go on this journey; you can join the next one, – he said. Bulanzhigit, taking the woman's words lightly, insisted that it was better to die than to be left behind, and he set off with the troops. The warriors crossed the Alatau mountains, reaching the Kalmyk horses at dusk and driving them away. They sent the horse herders fleeing and selected several warriors to hold back the pursuers. Among those defenders was Bulanzhigit. As they tried to divert the pursuers' attention, they scattered in different directions, fighting as they retreated, but Bulanzhigit fell into a dug pit at the pass. The others escaped with the horses. The Kalmyks captured Bulanzhigit and brought him to their Khan. They shackled him, tied him to a post at night, and during the day, they made him milk mares, dig wells, and carry water. Abilai did not send anyone to search for him, and Bulanzhigit endured torment in the hands of the Kalmyks for a year. The Kalmyk Khan had a beautiful and wise daughter named Karakozayim. One day, Karakozayim came to see the captured Kazakh hero, and she found Bulanzhigit, who was shackled and milking mares, struggling with wild foals. She was astonished by his endurance after a year of hardship and felt pity for the young man, as well as a budding affection for him. At night, Karakozayim approached Bulanzhigit, who was tied to the post, and asked: “What would you do if I set you free?” Bulanzhigit replied: “I would not leave empty-handed; I would take horses from your land.” The girl said: “If you take horses, you will be captured again, as there are still guards between the two nations. I will set you free, give you a horse, and you should return to your people without taking any horses. If you are a true man, you will find a way to get them later,” she said. Thus, the girl freed Bulanzhigit, brought him a racehorse that had been cooled down, and they exchanged goodbyes. Bulanzhigit followed her advice, avoiding detection, and crossed the border. It was the time when the people were just returning from summer pastures. While praying at the graves of his ancestors in the steppe, Bulanzhigit noticed a gravestone with a carved bird on top. He recognized it as the bird of his bride. At that moment, he felt overwhelmed with emotion. The words of his bride not to go on the expedition, his love for her, the suffering he endured, and Abilai's lack of search for him all came together, and he let out a lament. He sat at the grave, expressing his sorrow in a mournful tune. Thus, Bulanzhigit abandoned his warrior life and became a musician. The "Bulanzhigit's tune" was said to be the lament he expressed at the grave of his wife, which was played by musicians.
