Abduction of a Bride
A wealthy man with a single daughter and a wealthy man with a single son become in-laws. "Let two halves become one whole, let the household be harmonious and splendid! Let neither of us call the bride 'my daughter-in-law,' nor the other call the groom 'my son-in-law.' Let there be a shared home between us, a home that belongs to both of us," they agree. After the two wealthy men have made a firm agreement, their relationship strengthens day by day following the betrothal discussions. The two wealthy men live side by side, eagerly awaiting the construction of a splendid house that will serve as a bridge between the two villages. The girl and the boy play together and grow up intertwined. The innocent hearts of the children do not even realize that they are bound by the ties of betrothal. They grow up harmoniously, not only because they are destined to be one inseparable whole but also because they are led by their childhood joy in play. As the boy matures and the girl comes of age, they begin to drift apart. The graceful girl with long hair captivates the boy's heart and ignites a fire within him, yet she does not love him. The boy's clumsy demeanor, his laziness that doesn't allow him to break a blade of grass, and his boorish nature push the girl away. However, the boy, having heard that they are bound by the cradle and that a short rope and tight rein have been placed on him, is indifferent to the girl's lack of affection. "Once the household duties are done and the wedding preparations are ready, I will embrace your fair breast," he says, and walks away. When the wealthy man hears about the girl, he thinks, "It's just the influence of childhood," and does not hold back. He concludes, "What do you expect when they stray from the path of the ancestors, disrespect the spirits, and leave the hands of the white-haired mother and the white-bearded father?" Thus, both the in-law and the in-law's wife remain calm until one day, when the preparations for the wedding are complete and the white house is ready, the cold news arrives that "the girl has run away." The girl, who did not like the wealthy man's dull son, follows a horseman and escapes. After the girl and the boy have distanced themselves from the village, they take refuge among the bushes. At this moment, the girl confides in the boy: "Why did I run away from the wealthy man's son, who has wealth and lineage, a decorated bed, and a ready house? The reason is that he is dull. He has never seen the edge of livestock, and he is incapable of anything. He only knows how to wear a feather like a club, fasten a silver belt, and ride a horse. You are eager for work; a life that has tasted the sweetness of labor is the true life. Secondly, you are a flute player. Art does not die. That is why I love you. Let us accompany our journey with the flute; let me listen slowly," she says. The boy begins to play his flute, and the girl melts away as she listens. After hearing the news that "the girl has run away," both sides send out pursuers in different directions. A group of pursuers, galloping and clashing their stirrups, hears the sound of the flute and captures the girl and boy, who are frolicking in the thicket. The enraged group beats the boy mercilessly, leaving him for dead on the spot, and carries the girl back to the village. The tune that the boy played, according to the girl's wish, becomes known as "The Girl Who Was Abducted."
