Korkyt /9th century/ (Version I)
It is said that the birthplace of Korkyt, where his umbilical cord blood fell, was the Karaspan Mountain. When he was born, his mother craved the meat of a wild horse and carried her unborn child for three years and nine days. During those three years, every year she would experience labor pains, preparing for the arrival of the baby, and Korkyt's mother would struggle as if she were giving birth. However, no child was born in the first year or the second year. Then, after three years and nine days, Korkyt's mother truly experiences labor pains. This is not an ordinary labor; on that very day, it seems as if the entire world is in labor with Korkyt's mother, as dark clouds cover the sky. Thunder rumbles, lightning strikes, and a storm blows, causing chaos in the world. The people are filled with fear, interpreting all of this as an omen for the child to be born. There is a saying preserved in the memory of the people regarding this event: When Korkyt was born, The black sky was flooded, The black earth was covered in sand. The people were afraid at his birth, But rejoiced after he was born! Indeed, as soon as Korkyt was born, the wind calmed, the clouds dispersed, the sun shone, and the world returned to a tranquil state. The people regarded this as a good omen: "This child, who frightened us at birth, shall be named Korkyt!" – they shouted three times into his ear, naming him Korkyt. Just as Korkyt's birth was extraordinary, his life would also be remarkable. From a young age, he would pay attention to the flying birds, running animals, the blowing wind, and the falling rain, growing up in communion with nature. One day, as Korkyt grew taller and his bones became strong, he had a dream. In his dream, an old sage with a white beard down to his waist and a white staff reaching the sky appeared to him: "O Korkyt, arise!" said the sage. "You must create an instrument. Let your instrument be like the bone of a six-year-old bull, its body like a black coin, its skin from the belly of a mare, its peg from the horn of a ram, and its strings from the tail of a thoroughbred stallion. Let your instrument be called the kobyz. That kobyz will be the wings of your imagination, a light on your path, and a protector for your soul!" Korkyt awoke as if he had heard these words in a dream, with his heart filled with music and his throat overflowing with words. Immediately, he began to make the kobyz, fulfilling all the conditions set by the sage. Then, taking the kobyz in his hands, he tuned it and played a few notes, and it began to resonate beautifully. The music that filled his heart flowed into the kobyz, enveloping the world in a melodious sound. The flying birds, running animals, and the blowing wind all gathered in harmony, listening to the music of the kobyz. This is one of the many melodies that Korkyt played.
