Korkyt (Version IV)
The Kazakh people call Korkyt the master of musical power, particularly the ancestor of the kobyz. They believe that the most precious secret of the human soul is the sound of the kobyz. Therefore, in his time, shamans used the melodies of the kobyz to reveal the nature of the hidden power within them to the people. They praised the kobyz, captivating the minds of the people and warming their hearts as a sacred musical instrument. The magical qualities of the kobyz are depicted in passionate poetry. "From under the pine tree, I have taken, my kobyz. From the bark of the white birch, I have taken, my kobyz. From under the elm tree, I have taken, my kobyz. From the core of the oak, I have carved, my kobyz. From the white honeysuckle, I have made the ear, my kobyz. From the tail of the wild horse, I have made the string, my kobyz. From the horn of the great beast, I have made the peg, my kobyz. From the twig of the tamarisk, I have made the bow, my kobyz." Thus, through the pouring of verses and the playing of the kobyz, Korkyt's longing for the bright world, his dreams of bringing goodness into life, and his perseverance are told as a legend. The essence of the great ancestor's noble purpose is conveyed to the hearts of the people through the melodies of the kobyz, stirring thoughts and emotions. The sound of the lamenting kobyz feels divine. Meanwhile, the rhythm and melody of the "Korkyt" piece played on the dombra are somewhat different. Instead of a mournful lament, there is a predominance of reflection and turmoil. It seems to reveal the events and emotions experienced by our sacred ancestor, aiming to sow the seeds of greatness in the minds of people. Accordingly, legends branch out from that purpose. Korkyt rides on his swift steed, traversing the deep folds of the mountains, and as he climbs to one ridge covered in lush green grass, he sees a fierce battle taking place in a deep valley flanked by steep cliffs. The ground is littered with the bodies of the fallen, making it impossible to walk, while the few survivors are fighting each other with spears and swords, gnawing at each other like dogs. No one recognizes anyone else. Their eyes are blinded by blood; a father strikes his son, and a brother beats his brother. They are struggling as if they have lost their minds, fighting fiercely, tearing each other apart. At that moment, Korkyt sits on top of the hill and begins to play his kobyz. The magical, mournful melody echoes through the mountains and valleys. As if enchanted by the sorrowful sound, the mountains tremble, and the earth shakes. The people who were fighting senselessly stagger and fall down. The blood-soaked corpses melt away like lead and turn into rolling stones. As Korkyt plays with fervor, his soul is tormented, and his thoughts expand. Did the embrace of this great mountain become too narrow for the people of these tribes? Is the result of the greed that has severed their kinship that they are fighting over each other's scarves? Why do they not think of the consequences? Will such a bloody massacre not lead their people to ruin? Surely there must be a place in the vast world where one can spread their arms freely. But is there a way to bring reason to humanity, to prevent death? O God, be a helper to your forlorn creatures!... I will devote my remaining life and intellect to this path... "A beautiful velvet coat, Will become a rag when worn out. The blooming snowdrop, Will become dry when withered..." Korkyt's heart bleeds for the fate of his people. The destiny of the tribe torments his soul. The collapse of the wild tribe, which does not graze the earth's pasture, is his sorrow. With this tragic turmoil, Korkyt mounts his steed and sets out to wander the world in search of a land without death, a place with wide horizons. He travels a long way. One day, he reaches the edge of a dense forest and gazes at the vast plain. Looking around, he sees someone digging the earth at the edge of the forest. It is the time of sunset. When he approaches the person digging, he finds it is a young man. Korkyt asks for directions: – A life has been extinguished; whose grave is this? The young man looks intently at the traveler and replies: – This is Korkyt's grave. Upon hearing this, Korkyt realizes that he too has begun to age. But the thought of saving humanity from death and bringing them happiness inspires him. "I have not yet achieved my purpose; I will not die without fulfilling my dream." With this thought, he turns back. He crosses the layered sands, walks along the winding paths, and climbs over towering mountains. When he reaches the foot of the mountain, he sees someone digging the earth. It is a stout man, and Korkyt asks him for directions. He also looks at Korkyt with a stern gaze and says he is digging a grave. Seeing the sun shining brightly ahead, he turns left. He passes through dense forests, rugged mountains, hilly regions, and muddy marshes, reaching a calm sea. On the shore of the sea, he encounters a middle-aged man who is also digging the earth. He too tells Korkyt that he is digging a grave. Korkyt feels his strength beginning to wane. Without stopping, he moves on to the right. He walks along the shores of lakes and crosses flowing rivers. He traverses the vast steppe. Suddenly, he comes across a wide river shining like a mirror. On the riverbank, an old man is digging the earth. Exhausted from his journey, Korkyt asks: – O, esteemed elder, whose grave is this? The old man looks mournfully and replies: – "For every living soul, there is one death"; where will you escape from it, Korkyt? This is your grave; now enter it and take a breath! Wherever he goes, Korkyt finds himself confronted with the grave that has been dug for him. The signs of death appear before his eyes. With his white beard fluttering in the wind, he sits down there. "O, bright world, grant wisdom to those who do not appreciate you, be their protector! The beauty of the earth lies with the people; I would have made my people thrive, but I do not have enough time to fulfill that thought. I cannot do it alone; I did not realize that. If many come together, it is not a small thing; I did not think of that. Support my condition..." Right there, Korkyt expressed his wish to the bright world and played his final farewell melody... This dream is conveyed through the sound of the dombra in the "Korkyt" piece, which is neither mournful nor lamenting, but rather a stormy turmoil that swirls like the waves of the sea, with the dombra's rhythmic sound resonating throughout. It stirs the heart and immerses one in wondrous thoughts. It shakes the consciousness of humanity and captivates with spirited faith. The emotional turmoil in the rhythm of the piece leads one to the vast world filled with reflection. It nurtures the understanding of the essence of kinship and life. It brightens the soul and enhances the feeling of brotherhood. It deters from the treachery of conflict.
