Shalkyma
Once upon a time, the people used to settle on the eastern bank of the Zhaik River in winter and use the western bank as their summer pasture.
In one of those years, spring arrived early, and the herds of livestock, along with a multitude of people, crossed the Zhaik as they did every year. The four seasons of the year are: winter is called winter, summer is called summer, autumn is called autumn, and spring is called spring. Especially in the spring months: the bleating of lambs, the whinnying of foals, the mooing of calves, and the crying of camels make it seem as if a grand celebration is taking place in the fields. In spring, life returns to the village, bright and cheerful words are exchanged, and the melodious laughter of girls and young women becomes the joy of the fields. A great commotion. Surrounding greenery, lush green grass. It takes away your peace and stirs your spirit. You feel as if you are longing for someone. Such feelings can only be captured by the sensitive heart of a poet or the enchanting melody of a musician.
There are sheep in the pens,
There is fat in the belly,
There are camels with loads,
There are villages, there are people,
– say the poets, while musicians pour forth beautiful melodies from the strings of their dombra.
In one such year, the village of Zhantore also crossed the Zhaik in spring and settled on the slope on the other side. According to the customs of that time, the respected elders of the community gathered together to observe the other side of the Zhaik from earlier than the rest of the people. Zhantore, along with the esteemed members of the noble village gathered around him, crossed over to the other side. They spread thick carpets and felt on the top of a slightly elevated cliff that appeared flat all around and stood there, looking around with a satisfied gaze.
According to the traditions of that time: Zhantore was very perceptive from a young age, eloquent, and a poet with music flowing from his ten fingers. The marvelous sight of the spring steppe before his eyes must have uplifted his spirits. It is said that he picked up his covered pine dombra and, with a flushed face, poured forth a wonderful melodic tune. His relatives, who had never heard such a melody before, and the esteemed members of the village sat in silence, captivated by the sound of the dombra. At one point, after finishing his tune, Törе leaned the dombra against the cushion beside him. He raised his head and glanced around. It was silent all around. In an instant, he himself did not understand what had happened. “What is this?” he thought suspiciously. Suddenly, one of his relatives from the crowd said, “Törе, your recent tune was a wonderful melody that we have never heard before!” Only then did Zhantore understand the situation: “Oh, oh, oh! It was my heart overflowing as I looked at my people crossing over from the Zhaik!”
Thus, the melody "Shalkyma" is said to have flown out of Zhantore's chest like a swallow chick and roamed across the vast Kazakh steppe.
