Red Birch Machine
The emergence of Kurmangazy's "Kyzyl Kayyn" (Red Birch) is also attributed to this period in the oral tradition. According to legend, during his escape, Kurmangazy sheltered himself under the branch of a solitary red birch tree that had grown in the desolate steppe, managing to evade his pursuers.
Later, he is said to have performed, "My homeland, my land, my tree, my branch are all a refuge; I dedicated this to the red birch that opened its embrace and sheltered me with its leaves."
One of the compositions born during the musician's journey is "Mashina" (Machine).
Compared to the vast, desolate steppe of Kazakhstan, the life of the city, with its rhythmic movement and noise, is, of course, entirely different. The "Mashina" piece by the wandering Qazy depicts the life of the city as described.
It conveys the swift passage of city life, sliding like the wheels of a cart, with a tempo that matches the rapid rotation of a machine's wheels. Of course, there is no direct depiction in the music as we have described. However, there is a semblance of uninterrupted movement. It contrasts with the slow, unhurried melody of the steppe, embodying a sense of motion.
