The dispute of three mothers (Version II)
The legend of the famous musician Esbay Balustauuly (1842-1910) and his composition "The Dispute of Three Mothers" is worth recounting in full. "In 1903, a well-known nobleman named Qanaly from the Small Zhuz held a feast for his father in the autumn. According to the genealogy, although the twelve tribes of the Baiuly, six tribes of the Alim, and seven tribes of the Zhetiru share a common ancestor, they have different mothers, which is why there is a tradition to refer to them as 'the children of three mothers.' Qanaly invited the children of these three mothers and set up a yurt at the 'Terisakqan' riverbank of the Sağız river, considering it the central point of the three great nations. The number of yurts pitched in the carefully chosen lush area reached 900. Each yurt received a sack of flour brought from Khorezm. Additionally, as a portion for the guests, one horse was slaughtered for every yurt, and one sheep was slaughtered for each household. At that time, the highlight of the feast was horse racing, wrestling, and artistic competitions. According to tradition, it was announced in advance that the main prize for the horse race would be fifty fine camels, and the main wrestler would receive a herd of mares, while the musicians of the three mothers would showcase their talents at this feast, with the winner receiving a three-year-old bull, a silk robe draped over their shoulders, and a flag raised in their honor. At the appointed time, the notable and common people of the Small Zhuz gathered for the feast. Qanaly himself presided over the event. In the horse race, the speckled horse of the wealthy Tawan, a relative of Qanaly, came in first. Tawan, who was both a relative and a father-in-law to Qanaly, left the fifty camels he had wagered at the hearth, saying, 'My reputation is enough.' It is worth mentioning that Tawan passed away in 1926, and the feast was held the following year in 1927. This feast is said to have been the last major feast among the Aday. In the wrestling competition at Qanaly's feast, a young man from the Zhetiru was declared the champion and received a herd of mares. After the excitement of the outdoors subsided and the thirsty crowd quenched their thirst, it was time for the musical competition of the three mothers' musicians. The renowned musicians were invited to Qanaly's twelve-winged yellow yurt. Esbay Balustauuly, aged sixty from Baiuly, arrived. From Alim, the forty-year-old musician Togyzbay appeared. Lastly, from Zhetiru, the famous student of the musician Altynai, the eighteen-year-old Nausha girl arrived. Qanaly himself would judge the musicians. 'Dear relatives!' Qanaly began. 'The prominent musicians of the three mothers are sitting before us. According to the traditions of the past and present, if we were to engage them in a contest, it would take weeks to listen. Therefore, let us listen to each one of them and, as the saying goes, "The taste of the sea is known from a drop," let us express our judgment.' The audience accepted Qanaly's proposal. There, it was decided that the first performance would go to Nausha, as she was said to have 'a narrow path.' At that time, there was a tradition to explain the circumstances behind the piece being played. 'The event that inspired this piece happened to me,' Nausha said. 'One night, while playing ak-suyek with the village boys and girls, I lost the heel of my boot. The young man who was searching for the ak-suyek with me nailed the heel of my boot to the ground under the moonlight. It was a piece inspired by my admiration for that young man's talent.' Nausha then played her piece called 'Shileme-Shegeleme.' The next turn was given to Togyzbay, as it was said, 'the path of the grandfather is great.' 'My piece was also inspired by an event from my life,' Togyzbay said. 'In the village of Japsar, there was a girl named Mamit. We were well-matched and our words harmonized. Whenever I went to see her, a dog named Qyzylqaiyn would bark and block my way. The barking dog prevented the girl from coming to the village and drove me crazy. One day, I took a stick and went out. As usual, the dog barked at me, but I scared it away. I achieved my goal. It was a piece inspired by the joy I felt afterward.' Togyzbay skillfully played his piece. Next, it was Esbay's turn. He said, 'They played the piece well, but to avoid repetition, I will play it differently,' and right there he played a piece called 'Terisqaqpai.' When the piece ended, the audience erupted in applause. 'Oh my, there is no remedy for Esbay... Both the way he played and the way he strummed were remarkable... He played it spontaneously,' they said. Qanaly also joined the crowd's support, declaring, 'The winner of the prize is Esbay.' At that moment, Nausha spoke up: 'Dear brothers,' she said, 'since the turn came unexpectedly, I admit I played a piece I was used to. Otherwise, we can also create something on the spot. I do not need the prize or the flag. I will play a new piece I brought with me so that I do not come empty-handed to this feast.' The audience, led by Qanaly, accepted Nausha's proposal. Immediately, Nausha began to play a fresh and unexpected tune. The audience listened intently, captivated by the new piece. Especially, Qanaly's first wife, Kuntai, was so engrossed that she did not notice her scarf slipping and her hair becoming visible. The music stirred emotions and ended with a flourish. Kuntai hastily adjusted her scarf. Noticing this, Nausha smiled and said, 'The person who listened most attentively to my piece was our Kuntai aunt, so let this piece be called "Kuntai."' Pleased with the cleverness of the girl, Qanaly smiled and had a silver box placed before Nausha, saying, 'Carry your precious items with you.' At that moment, Esbay spoke up: 'Oh dear, it seems that after me, no one would play again; it seems my time is passing!' and right there he played a piece called 'You Passed, World.' The piece resonated deeply, stirring the thoughts of those present. Then Togyzbay said, 'Patience, Esaga, patience! The art that does not die does not lack a commotion around it. In such moments, it is appropriate to express gratitude,' and right there he played a piece called 'Alaylim Jalkan.' When the piece ended, someone from the bewildered crowd began to speak: 'Hey, relatives, have we been deceived by the way Baiuly waved his hand?' The audience, still under the influence of the remarkable performances, began to murmur. Some said, 'Nausha's hand is skilled,' while others argued, 'No, Togyzbay's melody was more refined.' As the argument escalated, Qanaly intervened: 'Alright, relatives,' he said, 'this was an art competition worth discussing. There was no piece played for free here; everything was performed with dignity and according to the rules. That is the greatest prize. However, a decision has been made. Now, do not make me speak twice. The victory belongs to Esbay; raise the banner of honor! As for Nausha and Togyzbay, they too deserve respect and honor. It is our duty to send them off with gratitude.'
