The Bronze Deer
The sunny days of spring were gaining strength, and it was a special time when the mountains known as Aktau, Ortau, and Kyzyltau, adjacent to Betpakdala in Arka, were particularly vibrant. The people had come out to the summer pastures, their spirits high, filled with joy and excitement. At such a time when nature and humanity met, and the delightful days of the summer pastures began, it seems that the renowned musician and dombra player, Saydaly Sary Toka, had gathered the famous dombra players of Arka at his home. They included the kobyz player Ykhlas, who had become like Toka's younger brother, the one who mastered both song and music, Dairabay, and the one who gave voice to the dombra, Kyzdarbek. All of their villages were adjacent to Sary Toka's village. Therefore, out of respect for Toka's seniority, they had a tradition of coming to greet him when the people went out to the summer pastures. At the right moment, their gathering, the intimate conversations, and the beautiful melodies played in turn lifted their spirits and inspired them. It was at such a moment that they spread a yellowish carpet on the grass, poured yellow kumys, and engaged in conversation when a thick herd of deer appeared, golden in color, spilling over from the ridge near the village. This marvelous sight amazed everyone. Then, the quick-witted and spirited Toka sat down and said, "This is a beautiful image that I hope will not leave my sight. If it is true that you can capture beauty in sound with your fingers, then try to turn this image into a melody!" Among those admiring the wild deer, Ykhlas was the first to respond to Toka's request, feeling a bit anxious and trembling slightly, then reached for his black kobyz. He passionately drew the strings and poured forth a melody as enchanting as that beautiful image. Although the tune seemed playful at first listen, it carried the sorrows of the steppe, embodying the dreams of freedom like the wild deer. The melody came to an end, and the thick herd of deer disappeared over the ridge, out of sight. At that moment, Dairabay, with joy swelling in his heart and tears in his eyes, was the first to speak. "Oh, Ykhlas, you are truly a genius who understands the human soul without words! You were born to create! That enchanting melody has turned the red deer of the steppe into a mythical golden deer!" Soon after, the melody named "Zhezkiik" was released and quickly spread across the vast Kazakh steppe... This event took place in the summer of 1880, during a serene moment by the river called Koktal, resembling a girl's braid, located in the territory of the Zhanaarka district of the present-day Zhezkazgan region. There is another legend related to the "Zhezkiik" melody. It is said that Ykhlas's grandfather, Altyn, was a jeweler with a bent finger. At that time, the village of Konyr Tora was located adjacent to the Tamalar. This was the famous son of Kudaimen Tora. Kudaimen had two sons, Konyr and Begaly, and Janalı. Begaly was the father of Jangir. Each of these men was not only known for their leadership but also for their wealth, becoming prominent figures in their surroundings. One day, Konyr Tora called upon Altyn the jeweler to prepare a dowry for his daughter, who was coming of age, and throughout the summer, he had jewelry made. Ykhlas, who had grown up alongside Altyn, accompanied him. He did not just accompany him; he helped his aging grandfather by tending to the forge and carrying coal. Since Konyr Tora's daughter was having jewelry made specifically for her, she came to the workshop every day to measure her fingers and wrists. During these visits, Ykhlas and she became close, their words harmonizing, and they fell for each other. Especially, Ykhlas experienced the first pangs of youthful love, feeling as if his soul was engulfed in flames. Moreover, Konyr Tora's daughter seemed to be somewhat indifferent to her betrothed, which pierced Ykhlas's heart. In a short time, he changed beyond recognition, becoming melancholic and playing his kobyz as if it were his only confidant. Altyn, his perceptive grandfather, sensed all of this. He felt sorrow for his grandson's tender feelings but what could he do?! Then, one day, the jewelry for the Tora's daughter was completed. Konyr Tora, with great satisfaction, said, "Altyn, may your hands be blessed, this is your handiwork," and presented him with two herds of horses. At that moment, Altyn expressed his gratitude, saying, "Your heart is perceptive, and your ears are keen, Tora, listen to my grandson's melody," which was a subtle hint at the mutual feelings of affection between the two young people, even if he did not intend to become a relative of the Tora. Konyr Tora understood this hint. How could he not? As soon as Altyn gestured, Ykhlas began to play the melody that had been a comfort to his young heart throughout the summer. The beautiful outer melody captivated the ears, drawing them in with its lively rhythm, yet the sorrowful feelings underlying the melody seemed to squeeze the heart. At that moment, Konyr Tora, feeling internally troubled, sat silently, lost in thought... Later, years passed, and while traveling, Ykhlas heard a mournful voice among the thick graves and tombstones and turned his horse. As he approached, he saw a wretched woman with tangled hair and a disheveled appearance. This was the daughter of Konyr Tora, to whom Ykhlas had once dedicated his famous "Zhezkiik" melody. It is said that Ykhlas's famous melody "Konyr" was dedicated to this Konyr Tora.
