Sarjan Tore
The event took place around the year 1833 between the head of the Arka Tamalar, Bi Itemgen, and Sarjan Ture, the brother of Kenesary. During the time of Abilai, the branches of the Tamalar known as Zhoqi and Shaka, which had migrated from the banks of the Volga and Ural rivers, settled in the Arka region of Betpakdala. Perhaps due to the sparse grass and bitter water of the arid land, no wealthy herders emerged from the Tamalar. Instead, fierce warriors and eloquent leaders who would not let their people down, as well as talented artists and skilled horsemen adorned with silk reins, flourished. Especially, the exquisite domes crafted by the Tamalar's masters still captivate the eye today, shimmering in the mirage of the hills. In this harsh natural environment and difficult times, one day Sarjan Ture sent messengers to request livestock from the peaceful Tamalar, who seemed to be living in isolation. At that time, the wise elder of the Tamas, Sengirbaiuly Itemgen, was nearing ninety and had lost his sight, yet he sent Sarjan Ture's messengers back empty-handed. Then, one day, news reached the Tamalar, who were unsuspecting by the lake Botakan, located between Karsyadir and Manadir, that "a thousand troops led by Sarjan Ture are coming to raid the village." Alarmed by the cold news and unsure of what to do, the people sought advice from Itemgen. He ordered a thousand camels to be brought out, dressed them in hats, tied poles to their sides, and led them to the flat plain of Manadir. He instructed three heroes of the Tamalar—Arab, Konyrbai, and Duysembai—to gather and stand with the thousand camels. Then, he had a felt blanket spread on top of a prominent hill facing the enemy and settled himself there, advising, "Now, do not move and wait." Before long, the thick dust of the steppe was raised by the approaching troops of Sarjan Ture. When the dense force reached the heights of Manadir, they were taken aback by the unexpected sight and had to pull back on the reins. The thousand camels, dressed in hats and tied with poles, appeared to Sarjan Ture as a vast army. At that moment, Sarjan Ture said, "The anger of livestock is the anger of the soul; the Tamalar's demeanor is stern; let us not suffer losses in vain," and he retreated with his troops. Later, a poet from the inner Tamas recounted this event in verse: "The two eyes of Itemgen, the wise, His words spoken not after the book, With a thousand men Sarjan came to raid, Frightened by the miracle, he turned back alone." This story, often recounted among the people, would be expressed through the voice of the kobyz by Ykhlas, and when the melody titled "Sarjan Ture" was played, it would bring tears to the listeners.
