The Girl Akzhelen and Kazangap
The blizzard that swept through November turned the surroundings into a white haze. – This is my first time seeing a blizzard in November. Hopefully, there won't be a famine this year, – said the older of the two horsemen. When the travelers reached the crest of the dune, a flickering fire was visible not far ahead. It was just the time when dusk was beginning to settle. According to Kazakh tradition, the two travelers greeted each other and entered the yurt. – We set out aiming for the riverbank, but our journey was hindered by this raging blizzard. Since we spotted this house on our way, we decided to stop here and spend the night. My name is Qazanqap, and this is my companion, Erjan, – said the older traveler as he warmed up, and tea was served to them. The owner of the house nearly dropped his cup. – Goodness, should I believe it or not? Is this really the famous dombyra player Qazanqap? Goodness, is this the Qazanqap who can make a five-year-old bull with hardened teats dance to his tune? – May your journey be blessed! – Qazanqap's eyes fell on the nine-stringed black dombyra resting by the small window. He stood up, took the dombyra, and began to play while still standing. – Play, Qazeke, – said the host, noticing that the musician had paused. – No, this dombyra has an owner; it cannot be played without his permission. I can tell from the tuning that the owner is a talented artist. – Goodness, Qazeke, you are not just anyone! Its owner is our own Aqzhele. The only child I have seen in my life. He is both my son and my daughter. Just as I finished speaking, a girl dressed like a young man, around fourteen or fifteen years old, entered the house and greeted them. This was Aqzhele. After tea was served and the table was cleared, it was time for the dombyra. Aqzhele tossed her two braids over her shoulder and struck the strings of the dombyra once or twice. – Uncle, someone has played this dombyra, – she said, as if she had just snatched it away. – My dear, just a moment ago, your elder brother Qazanqap tried it. Qazanqap noticed that the girl was left-handed, and the dombyra was tuned incorrectly. – My child, although I am older, you play first; I do not want to spoil the tuning of the dombyra, – Qazanqap said when Aqzhele offered him the dombyra. Aqzhele pressed the bridge key and began to play. Her slender fingers gradually moved up, producing sounds reminiscent of a galloping horse and the gentle trot of a steed. At one point, the unnamed finger of her left hand trembled on one of the middle keys, and the rhythm of the tune suddenly broke off. – Well done, may your talent reach great heights! What is the name of this tune? – asked Qazanqap, who was beginning to feel excited by the performance. – It was born on the white tablecloth spread before you; I do not yet know the name of this tune myself, – said the girl. – Let it be named after the talented girl who values the art of her ancestors; let it be called "Aqzhele," – said the musician's companion, Kadiraly. When it was Qazanqap's turn to play, Kadiraly turned his body towards the musician. He seemed to be following the trail of the powerful fingers, absorbing every note. Qazanqap was filled with a desire to pass his music down to future generations... A very sorrowful, mournful melody lowered the spirits of those present. When the musician's fingers reached the bridge, a single tear fell from Aqzhele's eye. – Oh my, Qazeke, they used to say that when you play, the dombyra speaks; it seems to be true. I hope the people are not waiting for another tumultuous event? – said those present. – The beginning of this year is unfortunate. I hesitate to speak, but I am letting this dombyra express what has long been on my mind; this is the "Kökil," – Qazanqap said, looking down and remaining silent for a considerable time. It is said that that year, there was a widespread famine in the land.
