Dairabai (Version I)
Dairabay's relative, a wealthy man named Koben, was looking to marry his only son to a girl from the Kanjigaly side. According to tradition, once the families of the bride and groom met and their words matched, the future groom would go to see the bride with the proper rituals. Following this custom, Koben's son also set out to see the girl. He was a young man who had grown up in wealth and had not experienced the hardships of life, a carefree and weak-willed lad. Therefore, Koben decided to pair his son with Dairabay, who was already known for his talent and charm in the community.
Koben's son and Dairabay arrived in the Kanjigaly region, which was settled at the foot of the Ereyemen mountain. The girl they came to see was the cherished only daughter of a respected wealthy man from that region. Her name was Ajar. It is said that she was truly a beauty, living up to her name.
In such situations, it is customary for both the bride's and groom's families to scrutinize each other. As the saying goes, "Seeing the rabbit's form, one becomes disillusioned with its fur." From the very first sight of Koben's son, Ajar was not pleased. After observing him during their gatherings and conversations, her disappointment only grew. In contrast, Dairabay, who came as the groom's companion, captured Ajar's attention with his appearance and intelligence. Especially when she witnessed his impressive artistic talents, Ajar's delicate heart fluttered, ignited by the flames of youthful feelings. When she looked at Dairabay, her face lit up, but when she glanced at Koben's son, she felt sorrow. Internally lamenting her fate, she allowed her tears to flow in solitude.
Dairabay recognized Ajar's inner turmoil without fail. Not only did he notice it, but he also found himself admiring Ajar's beauty and was drawn into her charming feelings. Particularly, Ajar's playful jokes that brightened the soul, her endearing behavior that warmed the heart, and her poetic conversations that inspired imagination seemed to elevate Dairabay, filling him with creative energy.
At such a moment, Dairabay expressed his feelings and Ajar's qualities through his dombra. This melody became known throughout the land as "Dairabay."
