Blind Eszhan
In the last century, there was a famous musician named Eszhan. From a young age, Eszhan grew up to be just and stubborn. He earned his living through hard work and carried the heavy burden of suffering. However, the young man, who was skilled in playing the dombra, became respected among the people. One day, Eszhan went to the rich man's village and asked him for the payment for his labor. Instead of listening to the conversation, the rich man, without a word, called his henchmen and had Eszhan beaten mercilessly. After being beaten and returning home in despair, Eszhan vowed to take revenge. A few months later, one day, he caught a good horse from the rich man's herd and rode away. For this act, the rich man had Eszhan arrested and sentenced him to two years in prison. Two years later, Eszhan returned to his homeland. During the summer heat, while parched and exhausted, he came across a village. He entered a white house and found no one inside, so he poured himself a cup of fermented mare's milk and drank it. As he moistened his dry throat and opened his eyes wide, he noticed a dombra hanging on the top of the wall. Eszhan picked up the dombra and played several tunes. Just then, thinking that the party had arrived, the mistress and the young lady rushed into the house and saw a poorly dressed stranger playing the dombra... - "Why are you taking the master's dombra without permission? Who are you? Now he will punish both us and you," the two women lamented. Eszhan silently indicated that he had made a mistake and left the house. Soon after, the master returned home and sensed that his dombra had been moved from its original place. He picked it up and struck it to check. - "Who played this dombra? Did someone else come?" he asked. The mistress and the girl told the truth about the incident. The master immediately sent his messengers and dragged Eszhan from the humble house on the outskirts of the village. On the way, they beat Eszhan with whips. When they arrived together, Eszhan, who would not let go of his revenge, knocked one of the messengers down again. However, during this struggle, the tips of the whips wielded by the master's two henchmen struck one of Eszhan's eyes, causing him to lose his sight. The master, already furious, became even angrier upon seeing Eszhan. Eszhan explained that he was a well-known musician, that he had been imprisoned for two years for a false accusation, and that he had missed the dombra, songs, and melodies, apologizing for accidentally playing the master's dombra. The master, feeling somewhat relieved, said: - "If everything you say is true, play me several tunes, then I will believe you," and offered his dombra to Eszhan... The fingers that longed for the dombra danced along the strings. Despite being furious, the master, who understood the music, sensed that this musician's performance was exceptional. As Eszhan transitioned to a new tune, the master's eyes were on him, and he seemed to forget the world around him, lost in the music. Once the master realized that Eszhan was a true artist, he apologized for his previous wrongdoing. He honored Eszhan as a guest and wanted to keep him under his care. However, no matter how much the master pleaded, the musician did not want to stay in the rich man's village. Despite the master's attempts to persuade him, the mark of his past life would not allow him to agree; he preferred to avoid being the master's dombra player. Eszhan bandaged his blind eye with a silk scarf given by the master's daughter, bid farewell, and set off towards the Ural River... Eszhan traveled on and eventually reached the Ural River, where he reunited with his beloved mother and sister. The news of the musician's return spread quickly throughout the region. The people gathered as before to listen to his music. After returning from a long journey and a difficult road, Eszhan added new melodies to his previous tunes. The experiences of imprisonment, the beatings from the rich man, the humiliation from the master, and the longing for his homeland all combined and poured out as music from the dombra. Addressing the gathered crowd, Eszhan said: - "I am glad to have returned safely to my homeland, I am proud to see you and play for you. I have crossed many difficult paths in life and endured many hardships. When I left you, I was Eszhan, but now, having lost one eye due to the master's anger, I have become 'Blind Eszhan.' I do not lament this; as long as my people are here and the art of my ten fingers exists, Eszhan will still be with you. A strong melody has emerged, listen to it," and he began to play his dombra. It is said that the tune Eszhan composed during that journey was called "Blind Eszhan."
