Nightingale (Version II)
It was the month of May in the blossoming spring. Mukey, with his dombyra wrapped in a leather cover hanging from his neck, was heading towards the village of Kentore, crossing the Bilizik River. The Bilizik River flowed like a snake, with the forest along its banks thickening. The musician was captivated by this beautiful moment of nature. The sweet melody of a nightingale perched on a birch branch reached his ears. Mukey dismounted and listened eagerly to the song of the nightingale. The cautious and sensitive singer, the nightingale, flitted from branch to branch, weaving a delightful tale...
Following the melody of the nightingale with the strings of his dombyra, the musician created the tune "Nightingale" while cooking meat along the way and then arrived at Kentore's house for the night. To ensure he wouldn’t forget the rhythm of the tune, he kept playing it after tea.
Kentore, well-versed in Kazakh life and art, asked,
– I have never heard this tune before; what is its name? Mukey explained that the tune was created on the road today and said it was called "Nightingale." Kentore replied,
– Then the nightingale you caught must be the nightingale of my peninsula, – making a teasing joke. Mukey responded,
– That is true, my lord; both the people and the land of Qaba belong to you; "there is no land without a lord, no land without a peak." If our lord gives a decree, why should we hold back... I have a request for you; the herald of spring has spoken. I thought I might have good fortune, – he said. Kentore, puffing up with pride, laughed heartily and said,
– Speak your request.
– My lord, several years ago, I married my cousin Nurgaysha to a talented man named Zhaiyr from the other side of the Sauyr Mountains without a bride price. Last winter, Zhaiyr brought two horses and two mares as a gift, based on the opinion of the village elders who said, "even a bride without a price is not without value." Recently, two shepherds came from Torghay to identify and take back his two horses. I planned to return two young fillies for his two mares, but they are causing a dispute, claiming, "You are hiding my mares and keeping them from foaling; I will take back my livestock." We had taken one of his mares for winter meat; if you could help resolve this, – he said. Kentore replied,
– If what you say is true, it would be possible to settle the matter without a fine and return the two fillies. Bring the disputants to me tomorrow, – he decisively responded. Grateful, Mukey continued to play his tune and said,
– I have been fortunate; let the tune be yours, – and set off. Thus, the tune "Nightingale" also spread among the people as "Kentore's nightingale."
