Lighthouse stone
In those days, during the summer, Kazakh villages would change their grazing lands, moving from one place to another. During one such migration, Tana's father, Tilemis Bi, first moved the yurt of his eldest son, Tana, and set it up in the summer pasture. The other villagers would gradually follow in their turn. Tana's yurt was pitched near the banks of the Irtysh River on a lush summer pasture. It is said that Tana was resting and sleeping inside the yurt during the day. After some time, he woke up to the sound of something humming and, upon opening his eyes, saw various creatures filling the yurt from the door to the back, unable to understand what they were. The young man, who had never seen anything like this before, closed the door from the outside, went out, and sent someone to quickly bring Elder Ertysbai from the next village.
Elder Ertysbai was a wise old man who was born and raised along the banks of the Irtysh River. When the elder arrived, he witnessed the marvel with his own eyes.
- "These are the white-headed beavers that inhabit this river. Their entering your home is a wonder, a very rare occurrence. My dear, it seems that God has blessed you with fortune and wealth," said Ertysbai. The young man, Tana, asked the elder:
- "What should we do with them now?"
They were wandering upstream along the river. It seems they had come to your home for shade in the hot sun. These are also creatures of the steppe, and they need to be hunted and skinned. The fur of these white-headed beavers is considered very valuable. The value of just one four-inch beaver pelt is equivalent to two horses or four mares. So, think about how much wealth this represents. If a fisherman wandering the river all summer catches even one of these, he will have a great fortune," said Elder Ertysbai, as he struck and killed the large beaver sitting in the back, asking Tana for permission to take what was in its mouth. Only after Ertysbai mentioned it did the others understand what it was. It was the "Lighthouse Stone." The leader of the beaver group would bite the lighthouse in his teeth during the dark night, illuminating the surroundings and guiding the others. If that stone is placed on paper at night, it can be used to read and write with its light. Later, the people learned that the value of that lighthouse stone, which Ertysbai had asked for, was estimated at twelve horses.
