Swan (Version V)
Meruert Merkhadin's melody. This melody was performed by Meruert herself in 1962, and she also shared its origin story.
On a sunny summer day in 1930, Meruert went to the lake at the foot of the Sarytau to hunt birds. She saw four swans swimming around a small island in the middle of the lake. Leaving her clothes on the shore where the waves were swaying and crashing against the rocks, Meruert took her gun and waded over to the island. There was a nest of swans there. She took six of the eight eggs from the nest and left two behind. Sensing that something was wrong, the swans rose from the water, circled above their nest, and flew towards Meruert on the shore, calling out with a pleading voice. Seeing this, Meruert thought:
– I wonder if they can take them away from here; let me see, – and she placed the eggs she had brought on the shore, hiding and watching from behind a rock. The swans approached the eggs several times, trying to knock them away with their wings and pick them up with their feet, but after failing, they circled around four or five times and flew away, echoing their sorrowful calls across the lake. Meruert, witnessing the swans searching for their eggs and hearing their pleading cries...
After returning home, she envisioned the events she had seen in the field, the beauty of nature, and translated the sound of the swans' calls into her dombra, composing the melody "Swans."
