Baydibek Bi
Baidibek became an orphan at the age of three during the time of war, losing both his father and mother. As he grew up under the care of his relatives, he tended the horses of a wealthy man named Shintas from the Uysyn tribe. He learned the traditions of skill, bravery, and horsemanship from experienced horse herders, trainers, hunters, competitors, and kokpar players. One day, about forty mares from the herd he was tending went missing while grazing. Shintas, furious, said: – Don’t come back without finding those lost horses! The young horse herder set off in search of the forty mares. He scoured the Karatau ravines, asking people and villagers he encountered. No one claimed to have seen or heard anything. Crossing over to the Moyynkum region, he wandered through the desert. Days passed. The boy became thirsty, and his horse grew weary. He collapsed under a saxaul tree and rested his horse. He rummaged through his pocket and found five pieces of dried bread. As night fell and darkness descended, the boy couldn’t sleep. He was restless. He heard the fluttering of owls and the hooting of nightjars from all directions. In the distance, he heard the howling of a steppe wolf, and closer by, the barking of a hare and the snapping of a hungry wolf reached his ears. The boy began to feel scared. What could he do? He broke a stick from the saxaul tree. He gathered stones from around him. If a wolf or a hare approached, he thought about lighting a fire and collected dry saxaul. Meanwhile, his horse wandered around grazing. Sitting there, the boy dozed off under the saxaul tree. He had a dream. In his dream, a man in white clothes and a white beard came to him and said: “My son, do not despair, do not be sad; if you keep heading towards Alatau, you will find your horses by the banks of the Shu River. May your journey be blessed, may the spirits of Ghaip Eren and Kırk Shilten protect you. May you achieve your desires! Amen!” The boy also said “Amen!” and raised his hands in the air when he woke up. He realized it was just a dream. Like the elders, he said: “Yes, spirit, support me!” and jumped up. He went to his grazing horse, put on its bridle, and continued heading east. While riding, he pondered. He interpreted his dream in his own way: Yesterday, when he reached the Jylybulaq spring on the northern slope of Karatau and visited an old shepherd's house, the shepherd said: – Over there at the Jylybulaq spring lies the shrine of Babai Tükti Shashti Aziz, the saint. You are an orphan boy. Go pray at his grave and offer your sacrifice! Come, I will take you there, – he said. The two of them went to the shrine and knelt down. The old shepherd recited the “Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad” three times and prayed. Baidibek tied the seven coins he had kept like a talisman to the edge of his scarf and left them at the entrance of the shrine as a sacrificial offering. Thus, they returned saying, “May Babai Tükti Shashti Aziz bless us!” As Baidibek walked through the vast desert, these thoughts came to his mind. “The man in white clothes and a white beard who was guiding me in my dream must be Babai Tükti Shashti Aziz. Yes, my ancestor, please help me!” he said, and he urged his horse on. The sun rose and set, and the next day he reached the banks of the Shu River. He found his horses among the thick reeds and drove them out. When he returned home, Shintas was as happy as if his wife had given birth to a son upon seeing the horses. He patted Baidibek on the back and said: – Well done, my son, the lost ones have been found. The veil has been lifted. We were worried about you, fearing you might go missing too. Anyway, both the horses and you have returned safely, – and he was pleased with him.
