Round Mother (Version I)
At the age of ten, Nurila goes to fetch water from the well. At one point, her hand accidentally touches the hook of the bucket, causing it to slip and fall straight down into the abyss. Not noticing the rope made of horsehair, Nurila falls down with the momentum of the bucket. Shivering in the cold water of the well that reaches her waist, Nurila barely manages to hold on. Eventually, Baydibek arrives at the top of the well with a group of young men and rescues Nurila from the well. Later, Nurila recounts the incident at the well to those who came to propose to her. "The person who held my arm is Baydibek; he will be my future husband. I will not marry anyone else," she reveals her feelings. Nurila has developed a fondness for Baydibek, and they have reached a point where they cannot stand to be apart. Sensing the deep affection between the two young people, Maktim Aghzam, their elder, calls for Baydibek and says: "My son, I will give you my Nurila; your lineage will be countless. From Jarkent to Tashkent, from Atyrau to Altai, your descendants will spread their wings. My only paternal wish is that you do not upset my daughter. Cherish her, nurture her, and hold her gently like a swan! This daughter of mine possesses a thousand precious qualities," he says. Thus, he gives his blessing to his two children with heartfelt emotion.
