About Genghis Khan (Version II)
Once upon a time, the Naiman tribe was ruled by a khan named Kaip. The khan had a daughter named Kunsulu. The beloved and only daughter was kept by the khan in a floating wooden house in the middle of the river, away from the people. She was accompanied by forty maidens. At regular intervals, provisions and necessities were delivered by the ducks. The wooden house was secured at all four corners with iron hooks. In the summer heat, the water surface was cool and pleasant. The khan had a habit of visiting his daughter's floating palace once every six months. According to this custom, one day when he went to the palace over the river, he found Kunsulu pregnant, her face pale with fear. The explanation she gave to her furious father was this: – I was looking at the sun rising in the morning, and my whole body bent down. After that, I became pregnant. The khan did not believe her words. He thought about killing her, but as she was his only child, he hesitated. Finally, after much contemplation, he ordered the wooden house to be unhooked and let it drift down the river along with the maidens. The lower part of that river was inhabited by the Mongol people. In that land, there were two archers named Jebe the Blind and Asukey. Both were friends and vigilant. They constantly patrolled the edges of the land, watching for enemy movements. One day, they noticed something dark floating on the river from a distance. The two archers made a bet right there. – Let this floating object be mine, – said Jebe the Blind. – Let what’s inside be mine, – said Asukey. As the wooden house floated past the land, the young men threw an iron hook to stop it. According to their agreement, the wooden house was given to Jebe, and he took Kunsulu inside. After her time came, Kunsulu gave birth to a golden-haired boy. Until he was five years old, he was not named. This was because the poor mother feared that "they would kill him" and kept him hidden from the stepfather. After coming to Asukey, Kunsulu gave birth to two sets of twin boys. She named the first set Toregatai and Torgeltai, and the second set Saragatay and Sargaltai. These twins were born with their shoulder blades fused together. The surgeon separated them with a sword. Upon hearing this, a wise old man lamented: – What a pity! They should not have used a sword to separate them. Both they and their descendants will be at odds with each other, – said the old man. One day, Kunsulu had a thought: "These four are from one father. The golden-haired one is from one father. Tomorrow, when they grow up, they will betray each other." Thinking this, the protective mother secretly sent her golden-haired son to a mountain called Bulghyr, located at the head of that river. Fifteen years passed after this. The wise old man's words came true, and Asukey's four sons divided the land into four parts and began to fight among themselves. The land was in turmoil. Seeing this, the elder of the people, Maiky Bi, came to Kunsulu and asked where the golden-haired boy was now. – The boy who will become a figure for the people is he. These four rascals are about to ruin the land, – said Maiky Bi. According to his mother, the golden-haired boy was alive and currently at Bulghyr Mountain. He was sending a branch of juniper down the river every day. His mother knew he was alive from this. In short, Maiky Bi set off to bring the golden-haired boy from Bulghyr Mountain. Before leaving, Kunsulu gave him a necklace soaked in her sweat. – If you do not catch him with this, the boy who has gone astray will not be easy to catch, – she said. What the mother said was true. Accompanied by forty companions riding white horses, the golden-haired boy passed through a barricade and a noose thrown over his neck without noticing them. As he passed, everyone shouted: "Chinggis, Chinggis!" When the wild boy saw the necklace coiled like a snake on the hill, he stopped and dismounted. He sniffed the necklace and began to cry bitterly. His companions on white horses left him behind and galloped away. The crying boy was captured by the men selected by Maiky Bi. The boy knew a bit of language. After hearing his mother’s name, he did not resist much. Maiky Bi's group seated the boy on a white felt mat on that mountain, raised him three times with forty spears above their heads, and proclaimed him khan. Now, the khan had to be brought to the people without letting his feet touch the ground. This was an ancient tradition. If he was placed on a horse, the horse would not be able to carry him. There was no way to bring him on foot. After thinking, Maiky Bi finally had his men make a small cart with a roof and two wheels. They harnessed a horse to that cart and brought the khan to the people. From that day on, he was called "Chinggis." One meaning of the name Chinggis is "true girl," which describes his mother's holiness and purity from sin. Another legend suggests it means "peak-cliff," as the boy grew up between the peaks and cliffs of Bulghyr Mountain without people for fifteen years. After Chinggis Khan arrived in the land, he ordered the heads of his four stepbrothers, who were causing chaos, to be taken. Then he set out to conquer the neighboring tribes.
