Genghis Khan (Version IV)
Once there was a khan named Altynbel. The khan had only one son, named Kaishyly khan. He had no other children. One day, the khan's wife became pregnant. Eventually, she gave birth to a girl: "If you say 'moon', she has a mouth; if you say 'sun', she has eyes." The mother, upon seeing the beauty of her daughter, fainted. She told the khan, "She has brought forth such a girl." The khan summoned fortune tellers and shamans and said: – "Tell me the fate of this child!" The fortune tellers read the fortune: – "Her fate is great; no one has ever given birth to such a child before. There are two dangers for her: when this girl turns fifteen, she will bear a son. If you ask where she will find him, she will find him either from the wind or from the sun. She must be raised without exposure to the sun or the wind!" – "Keep this child in a dark place where she will not see the sun or feel the wind!" – said the khan. The khan also said: – "I was thinking the same!" – and secretly raised her so that no one would see her. Then the khan's wife called an old woman. She gave the old woman a hundred dilda a year. The old woman took the child and raised her in a dark iron house. The girl drank water through a tube and saw not the sun itself but its rays through the window, and she turned fifteen. One day, the girl asked the old woman: – "Where have you been?" The old woman replied: – "Oh, my child, there is a bright world. In that bright world, there is your father, your mother, and many people. I go there." The girl said: – "Oh, old woman, please don’t tell anyone, show me that bright world!" The old woman said: – "Alright, if you don’t tell anyone, I will show you," and she took the girl outside. After being taken outside, the girl saw the bright world and was overwhelmed with joy, fainting. During those days when she was outside, Allah's gaze fell upon her. By Allah's command, the girl became pregnant. One day, her belly grew. The old woman realized that the girl was pregnant: – "Now they will kill me!" – she mourned. – "Even if they kill me, my blood is pure; I will tell the khan's wife," she said. The old woman went to the khan's wife and said: – "Your daughter is pregnant. I have shown her to no one. If you kill her, my blood is pure. If I survive, my path is pure!" The khan's wife said: – "What else have you done?" The old woman replied: – "I will not hide what I have done. I only took her outside once after begging. Since then, she has become pregnant." The khan's wife said: – "Since you have not done any wrong, I will answer the khan myself!" – and she went to the khan. She told the khan: – "Your daughter is pregnant by Allah's command. No one has seen her," she said. The khan said: – "Then kill her!" The wife said to the khan: – "It would be a bad reputation to say 'the khan has killed his daughter'." The khan said: – "Whatever you do, just keep her away from my sight!" – he said. The wife could not bring herself to kill her daughter. She placed her in a golden cradle, closed the lid, tied the key outside, and set it adrift in the flowing river. The girl's name was Almalı Kөrіktі. The river she was set adrift in was the long-flowing Irtysh. Along that river lived a nomadic people called the Kalmyks. There was a hunter named Dombayul and a watchman named Shaba Soqyr, who were hunting in the deserted, sunless area along the river. Shaba Soqyr, who could see a day's distance, spotted something floating in the middle of the river: – "Oh, friend, something is being carried by the river's current in the middle of the water!" – he said. Dombayul the hunter replied: – "If the Lord in heaven helps us, we will take it. If we catch it, will you take the inside or the outside? If it is something interesting, we might argue and fight over it!" Shaba Soqyr said: – "If my eyes do not deceive me, it is shining and reflecting like gold and silver in the sun. Whatever it is, I will take the outside!" – he said. Dombayul the hunter replied: – "I will take the inside, whatever comes out, let it come out. Even if nothing comes out, I will see my fortune!" – he said. As they got closer and recognized it was a golden cradle, he spun a silk thread and tied it to an arrow to shoot it. Just as he was about to shoot, Shaba Soqyr shouted: – "Aim sideways, aim sideways! – Don’t shoot straight; if there is a living thing inside, the arrow might hit and kill it!" – he said. Not shooting straight, he shot sideways, and when the arrow struck the cradle, they pulled it in with a rope. When they opened the cradle, there lay a girl, as beautiful as the moon on the fourteenth night. "The moon on the fourteenth night" was left in the open, a girl! Upon seeing her, both of them were overwhelmed and fainted. Water flowed from their mouths, and they blew their noses, and when they regained their senses, they asked: – "Who are you? What kind of being are you?" The girl replied: – "I am the daughter of khan Altynbel. Since birth, I was not shown the bright world; I was raised in a dark iron house, drinking water through a tube and receiving food through a window. I heard there was a bright world and longed to see it, and when I turned fifteen, I came out into the bright world. After seeing the bright world, I fainted. My only sin in this world is that. After that, without delay, I became pregnant. My father heard and said: 'Let her be killed!' My mother, who raised me, could not bring herself to kill me and said: 'Let her go wherever she wants, let her go alive!' and placed me in this cradle, setting me adrift." Dombayul the hunter said: – "We will take you, will you be ours?" The girl replied: – "Once I am free from this burden, I will be yours!" – she said. Dombayul the hunter said: – "Alright!" – he said. They became husband and wife. There is a saying: "The burnt food is bad." Dombayul the hunter became impatient. With his eyes wide open and the girl beside him, he forced himself upon her. The cradle of Almalı-Körіktі broke with a loud crack. – "Do not hold it against me for this! 'She is pregnant, and she will meet a girl' they say. I wanted to test my fortune! I am lucky!" – he rejoiced. The time came, and Almalı-Körіktі gave birth to a son, who was even more beautiful than his mother. One of his hands was born deformed, and it was full of blood. In the year five hundred and fifty-nine of the Prophet's history, in the year of the pig in the Kazakh calendar, he came into the world in Moghulistan. – "The mother who gave birth to him is not lying; she truly is a girl. There is no deceit or evasion; we witnessed it without seeing a man, and we have licked the mouth of the white musket!" – they said. The Kalmyks swore by the mouth of the white musket. Shaba Soqyr and Dombayul the hunter named the boy "Shynkyz". Whatever name he was called in his youth, he became known by that name: "Shynkyz" he became known. – "Now let us not wander in the wilderness!" – they said, and returned to their homeland. The boy grew up, becoming more charming than the girl and more spirited than the boy, growing up as a foreign child. After becoming the wife of the hunter, she gave birth to a child every six months. Their names were: Bөdenetai, Bүrgeltai, Jөrgemtai. When they were old enough to play, the three of them played together, while Shynkyz played alone. Almalı-Körіktі would say: – "The one who follows the deer rolls in clean ground, the one who follows the pig rolls in mud!" – she would say. When Shynkyz reached the age of ten, the former kings of this land died. The people could not find a good person to become a khan: "Even if he is a child, let us make Shynkyz the khan!" – they said, "We will die where you say die! We will stay where you say stay!" – and they swore by the mouth of the white musket. Shynkyz became the khan and was just, there was no oppression or violence, no theft or lies. He was pleasing and charming to the people. Bөdenetai, Bүrgeltai, and Jөrgemtai were the offspring of the same litter, and they began to bark and disturb the peace: – "This is a child without a grandfather. We will not make him a khan! We have a grandfather. Make one of us the khan!" – they said, and it turned into a quarrel and fight. Then Shynkyz said: – "I was alone, and they are three or four. This large crowd is also their kin. Let me go, or I might be killed while I sleep one day!" – and he decided to escape and went to his mother. He said: – "Oh, mother, I am going to run away. These three bad boys want to kill me!" – he said. His mother asked: – "Now, my child, where are you going? Tell me where you are going. How will I know if you are dead or alive?!" – she said. Shynkyz replied: – "Where should I go? I will go to the head of the long-flowing river, to my grandfather's people, and I will lie there. If my grandfather is on the other side of the river, I will cross it. If I cannot cross, I will lie on this side of the river. Oh, mother, I will let you know if I am dead or alive. I will leave a bird's feather from this long-flowing river. If the feather passes by, I am alive. If the feather does not pass, then I am dead!" – he promised, and said, – "Farewell, mother!" – and left. He left and went upstream, reaching his grandfather's land, but he could not cross the river and lay down on the near side. He hunted animals and birds and made a house from animal skins. He piled up bird feathers high. The wind blew, swirling, and fell into the water, and his mother knew he was alive. After Shynkyz left, the people were without a khan. "Who shall we make a khan?" – they wondered. "This woman's son would be good," they said, and appointed a boy named Bүrgeltai as khan. They did not like him and chose Bөdenetai instead. He too was the same; there was much theft and crime. The people said: "This is a khan, a living being!" – but they did not accept him as a person, and the people ceased to be a community. The people gathered in one place and held a council: – "Our khan was unjust, he was bad. He could not hold the people together. During the time of our khan Shynkyz, there was no theft, lies, gossip, oppression, or violence in our land. Our land was prosperous, and we had no worries; now we are diminished, and we are dwindling. Our people are decreasing and becoming impoverished. These bad ones cannot be khans. Let us seek out Shynkyz!" – they agreed. – "Where can we find him? Who knows where he has gone?" – "If anyone knows, it is his mother; let us ask her!" The people gathered and went to his mother, asking: – "Do you know where Shynkyz has gone?" – they said. – "Your bad children could not be khans. They could not hold the people together. We want to find Shynkyz, but we do not know where he is. If you know, please tell us, you must know!" His mother said: – "I will tell you. Even if you go, you will not find him here. If he comes, I will guide you straight! Just keep going up this long-flowing Irtysh! Shynkyz is along this river. You will find him; if you go and plead, he will come! Do not speak ill. He has not seen people for a long time; do not frighten him!" – "Alright!" – they said, and twenty-five men – all good people, went to search. One day, they reached the place where Shynkyz was lying. They saw the house made of animal skins. They saw the high pile of bird feathers. They saw the post where they tied the horses: – "Shynkyz is here," they said. They realized he was not there, having gone hunting. – "If he sees us, he will run away. Let us hide our horses and ourselves among the bird feathers!" – they said, and lay down. After a while, Shynkyz came. He said to the post: – "The khan has come, the khan has come!" – he said. – "Hold the khan's horse!" – he said. He dismounted. – "Tie the khan's horse!" – he said. He tied it himself. The horse was a beast named Kеркудан, with horns. He headed towards his house: – "Open the door for the khan!" – he said. He opened the door and entered the house. – "Spread a mat for the khan!" – he said. He spread the mat himself and sat down. – "Bring food for the khan and place it before him!" – he said. He prepared and placed various dishes before himself. He said to himself: "Take it, my lord," and ate. – "Prepare a bed for the khan!" – he said. He laid down on the bed. Just then, twenty-four men came in, saying: "We will catch him!" They grabbed one man and threw him one way, another man and threw him another way. The men said: – "Oh, my lord khan, we came pleading to serve you. Your mother sent us. After you left, the people ceased to be a community. Your younger brothers have grown up; they have grown up, and they have become a burden. Calm your anger and reconsider! Come, be the khan, and take your place!" – they said, and he followed them. They brought him back to his homeland. When they said, "We will make him khan again!" the three younger brothers born of the last rich man said: – "We will not make him a khan! Let him go; if he does not go, we will kill him!" – they said. Then the people gathered and held a council: – "What shall we do with him? If we make him khan, they say, 'We will kill him!' If we make them khans, they cannot hold the people together. Whichever of them we make khan, let his mother decide!" – they said. They sent three of them to his mother: – "Whichever of your four sons you make khan, we will be satisfied!" – they said. The four sons came to their mother, and one said: "I will be!" The four of them argued. Their mother said to her four sons: – "You are all my children," she said. – "Do not quarrel! I will decide fairly for you! Hang your bows on this mirage! Whichever bow the mirage lifts, he will be the khan!" They took their bows and hung them on the mirage. The bows of the three fell to the ground. Shynkyz's bow was lifted by the mirage. There was no support underneath, no binding above. At that moment, the woman gathered all the people and said: – "Look at this! – This child was born by Allah's command. This bow is lifted by Allah's command. Make him the khan! If those three commit oppression, kill all three of them and cast them away! People, you are many; do not let oppression happen!" – she said. At that moment, Shynkyz became the khan and was named "Shyngyz khan." Over time, he became known as "Shyngyz khan, born from the mirage, who hung his bow on the mirage!" He had fled at the age of thirteen. At the age of twenty-seven, in the year of the tiger, he ascended the throne. As time passed, he became more prominent: "the khan of khans." Once, there was a soul created separately by God. He took a good wife and had three sons and one daughter. While he was a khan, he surpassed all other khans. He did not let any enemy defeat him, nor did he bring sorrow to his people. Then, people came from the city of Rum, saying: "Give us one of your sons! – we will make him a khan," and he gave them one son. People came from the city of Crimea: "We will make one of Shyngyz khan's sons a khan," and he gave them one son. The people from the caliphate came: "We will also make one of his sons a khan!" – and he gave them one son. Then, the Russians came, saying: "We will take one of Shyngyz's sons," and since he had no sons left, he gave them his daughter named Akbibi. They took her, saying: "We will make her a khan." Shyngyz khan was wise, intelligent, and deep-thinking. While he was destroying and conquering many people, he had no opposition to anyone's religion. He went to Bukhara-Sharif to inquire about religion: – "I firmly believe in the oneness, universality, and power of God!" – he said. He did not oppose prayer, fasting, or almsgiving. Only regarding the "Kaaba stone," he said: – "The God who created such a vast universe cannot be found in just one house!" – he said.
