The Wise Frost
One day, Khan Zhanibek asked a question at a large gathering of the people: "Who is the worst person? What is the worst and the best place? What is the worst grass? What is the worst bird?" The people deliberated a lot and came to a conclusion on everything. However, they could not answer the first question. "The best place and the worst place is the market. From the market, a person can come out rich or poor. They are both the same," the people said regarding the best and worst places. "The worst grass is the bulrush, which is not suitable for eating or firewood," they answered the third question. "The worst bird is the cuckoo, because it does not build a nest and does not raise its own young," they said. When it came to the question of "What kind of person is bad?" each person gave different answers, and none could find the right one. One said, "A bad person is a cripple," another said, "A blind person." Each mentioned different flawed individuals. The people argued a lot about this. It seemed there was no end to the argument. At that moment, a beggar named Ayaz, with a dirty and torn appearance, stepped forward from the crowd and said to Khan Zhanibek: – Noble Khan! Just as the sun shines down on everyone from the sky, your justice shines upon your people. Allow me, your poor servant, to answer your question to the people. The Khan, eager to hear the words of those who looked to him, said: – Speak, Ayaz. – If I speak, we cannot find the worst person among the crippled, the blind, and the flawed. Among the people in your kingdom, they might be the most useful individuals. Being crippled or blind does not make them guilty. The worst person in your great kingdom is me. – Why is that? Explain! – the Khan said, surprised, and Ayaz replied: – I was born into poverty and grew up in want. After I grew up, I worked as a laborer, and at first, I could find food, clothing, and even money for myself, but after a while, I could no longer even find food for myself and became a beggar. I was not even good at that, being infested with lice and worms, my appearance was a mess. I wandered, and there was no place in the world where I could find shelter. Behold, there cannot be a worse person than me, who is useless to anyone and brings no benefit other than harm. The people around fell silent. The Khan thought: – You have decided that the whole nation is not worth anything, so I will make you my vizier, – said the Khan. The people were astonished, especially the nobles close to the Khan, who could not accept that the worst Ayaz was put ahead of them. About a year passed. After Ayaz became the Khan's vizier, he showed great wisdom and knowledge. The Khan took Ayaz's advice and loved him. He opened various trades for the people and introduced new forms that benefited the people. The people became richer year by year, found justice, and were very grateful to the Khan for such wise and just governance. The vizier improved day by day, and the people loved him more each day. However, the people close to the Khan could not tolerate Ayaz. The former servants of the Khan, who were without merit and knowledge, began to conspire against Ayaz, who had found his way through his own knowledge. They slandered Ayaz, accusing him of things he did not do. Eventually, they convinced the Khan, leading him to believe their words, and took action to remove Ayaz from his position, even though he realized he was losing a trusted advisor. Every day, Khan Zhanibek sat with his attendants, deep in thought, while his viziers waited to hear what the Khan would say. Then the Khan ordered them: "Find out what I am thinking today!" – he said. "If you do not find it by tomorrow, I will take your heads!" The viziers, frightened and unsure of what to do, held a council to solve the Khan's riddle. No matter how they thought, they could not figure out what the Khan was thinking. Finally, they sought the wisdom of Ayaz, whom they had previously slandered. They forgot their past grievances and cried out for help, asking him to save them from disaster. Seeing them in distress, Ayaz initially hesitated to respond, but later, noticing their desperation, he answered. – You tell me, how was the Khan sitting when he asked you this? – Ayaz said. – If the Khan was sitting with his feet crossed, it means he wants to change his throne; if he was looking up while asking, it means he wants to change the palace. If he was sitting on his knees while asking, it means he needs a good steed, – Ayaz explained to them. The viziers were pleased with this and promptly went to the Khan with the answer. The Khan was astonished that they had figured it out and asked them: – You did not find this out yourselves; who taught you this? – he asked. They could not avoid mentioning who it was. They said it was Ayaz. – Look, you slandered him, and he saved you from death. Ayaz is wiser than you; he deserves to be a vizier, not you, – the Khan said, returning Ayaz to his former position. Ayaz's enemies grew even more numerous. Foolish people, who could not achieve anything, often could not tolerate the good and could not apply their wisdom and knowledge, spreading slander and gossip everywhere. They hated those who were more intelligent than themselves. Ayaz was also subjected to this, and they managed to persuade the Khan against him again, leading to Ayaz's removal from his position once more. One day, while hunting, the Khan asked his vizier: "If you do not find the answer, I will take your heads!" and posed the following question: "Show me forty living things that can be skinned without shedding blood!" The viziers consulted among themselves but could not figure it out, so they came to Ayaz again: "The Khan says this, help us, save us from disaster," they cried, forgetting the wrongs they had done to him. Seeing them in tears, Ayaz took pity and said: – How many people were with the Khan when he asked this? If you count, there were forty people with him while hunting. – Then it means the Khan wanted to see his attendants naked; if he takes off their clothes, they will not die, they will remain alive, and no blood will be shed, – said Ayaz. The ministers went to the Khan and told him what Ayaz had said and that he had solved the riddle. The Khan, ashamed of having slandered Ayaz for no reason, reinstated him as minister.
