The Lame Horse, Khan Jochi (Version I)
48. The Lame Wild Horse, Jochi Khan (Version I)
Jochi Khan's young son, riding on a saddle, chased after a lame wild horse while accompanying the hunters. The lame wild horse joined a group of wild horses that were galloping away. The restless steed under the boy, excited, dashed off, joining the wild horses with its tail raised. The wild horse's frenzy killed the boy. The hunters could not find the boy. Jochi, enraged, commanded the hunters: "Find my son!" and ordered a large crowd to search for him.
"I will pour lead into the ears of anyone who tells me my son is 'dead!'" – he proclaimed. The hunters found the boy's mangled hand in one place. Now, no one could dare to tell Jochi Khan that his son was dead. Finally, the crowd, sitting in the yurt, had a bard sing a song. The essence of that song was as follows:
O our lord, Jochi Khan,
What does the dombra sing?
It plays a single note,
Listen closely to this.
The lame wild horse, the cunning wild horse,
The wild horse that fled from afar.
In the endless wild steppe,
It encountered a boy wandering,
It leaped from ridge to ridge.
The lame wild horse, Jochi Khan!..
In the desolate barren steppe,
In the rugged, uneven terrain,
Roaming freely,
The herd of wild horses galloped.
Chasing the lame wild horse,
The restless steed joined in,
Playing and dashing alongside
The herd of startled wild horses.
Death is the work of the Creator,
The wild horse's frenzy.
The wild horse and the steed, restless,
The galloping wild horse, excited.
It chewed and killed your son,
Tore him apart and devoured him,
The herd of wild horses was startled.
The dombra, lamenting and singing,
Brought you the news of your son,
This is what it has conveyed, O Khan!
Do not cast blame on others,
For your son, who was led astray,
That cunning wild horse, the wild horse.
The lame wild horse, Jochi Khan,
Believe it, O Khan, this is true!
