The Story of Jochi (Version II)
His only son, Jochi, went hunting as a child, became excited by a wild horse, lost control of his horse, fell off, and was killed by the horse dragging him. The young man who had gone out with him fled in fear and disappeared without a trace. When the boy did not return from the hunt, both the khan and the people sensed something was wrong. "This boy is now lost. Whoever brings me news of my son's death, I will take their head!" he declared. At that time, there was a bard named Ketboga. He played the dombra. One day, while playing the dombra, he conveyed the news of the boy's death through his music. The tune he played was: "Alasha Khan, Jochi Khan, the lame wild horse has trampled him, it has killed him, it has brought forth the order!" Upon hearing this, the khan said: "Ketboga, the sound of your dombra has changed! I know you are speaking through your dombra. If I am not a foolish person, then it is indeed true that the only son of the khan has fallen," he said. When these words came out of the khan's mouth, the people erupted in noise. "Aldiyar, my lord, we heard it from your own mouth," they said. At that time, it was said to be the time of the wild horse's noise. It was the season when livestock were giving birth, and both wild animals and livestock were calving. The khan decreed: "Let all livestock be separated from their young, so that the newborns do not cling to their mothers, let the animals mourn like me, let them lament," and he lay down with his back turned, not eating or drinking. Alasha Khan was a just man who would split a black thread in two. When two disputants came, he would wake up startled even if he was asleep. If he was eating, he would put his feet on the ground. He would not eat if the two disputants were not appeased. His wife came and said: "My lord, there are two disputants at the door." The khan, as if startled, asked: "What is the dispute, did you ask?" "I asked. One is a traveler from another land, and the other is our familiar Jombas. The traveler, while going on a long journey, left a weight of gold with Jombas, saying, 'I will take it back on my return.' Now that the traveler has returned from his journey and wants to take his gold, Jombas has not given it. He says, 'What does it matter that it was once yours? My eyes and hands have grown accustomed to it, I will not give it back.'" Alasha Khan said: "It would be keeping the trust; if the owner comes asking, it should be returned to him." The queen replied: "Your Highness, we are your servants! 'If the khan speaks twice, he becomes a commoner; if a commoner speaks twice, he becomes a woman.' Is this child not a trust that the Creator has entrusted to you and me? Even if he is offended by taking back his trust, will the offense last?" At this, the khan raised his head: "You are right, and I am wrong," he said, coming to his senses, and began to eat and drink, allowing the livestock to calve. Then the wild mare did not take her foal. The khan lamented: "If this foal dies of hunger, it will be my fault, the blame will fall on me!" He then declared, "I will give a daughter without a dowry to whoever brings me this foal." Then the same Ketboga, covering his five fingers with resin, played the dombra, conveying the situation of the khan's son through the music. The people who heard it were moved to tears. The mare also fainted, overwhelmed, and began to nurse her foal. Now the khan decided to take revenge on the wild horse and called for the people to prepare for a hunt. He had a pit dug for the young men. The young men took hoes and began to plow the land. The girls prepared their food and drinks. The pit they dug was called "the water that the wild horse cannot cross." When chasing the wild horse, only five of them escaped the eyes of the people. The place where the wild horse escaped was named "Five Wild Horses." When his son died, his daughter-in-law remained on the right side, and to mourn for her son, he had her moved to the right side. He found one of his son's bones and had a tomb built for it, which is called "Jochi Khan's tomb." After that, he had his own tomb built by his daughter-in-law. It was located on the windward side of the river, on a small hill. His daughter-in-law had her tomb built in a low place out of sight of her father-in-law's tomb, saying, "Let it be in a place where it cannot be seen by my grandfather's tomb." A Nayman, who grazed and wintered in the Seven Konyrs, said: "A brick fell from the upper side of Alasha Khan's tomb, and it had an inscription. The inscription read 'Khan Bibi,' referring to the khan's wife."
