Bayshigir Baba (Version III)
Amir Timur had a habit of visiting Turkestan before embarking on a campaign to conquer a country, taking a handful of its sacred soil in his handkerchief. Following this custom, he came to Turkestan and gathered his wise companions to discuss matters. When the topic of the campaign arose, the court poet Kermani said: – O my lord, you are about to set out on another campaign. Isn’t it time to stop making widows and orphans, to cease causing rivers of tears and plunging people into grief and sorrow? Human blood is not water; how many lives have been cut short in their youth? While we are busy convincing them to follow our orders, who guarantees that foreign invaders won’t raid and devastate our land? Think about this as well, – he said. His last words plunged the bloodthirsty khan into deep thought. “Indeed, what should we do? What good have I done for the people?” – this thought returned to him. After a brief silence, he asked: – Well, what do you suggest I do? – looking at Kermani. – Build magnificent villages, notable cities, and mausoleums. They will serve as your eternal monument. When people see these, they will not ask who built them. Then your name will be remembered. – That is a wise and reasonable suggestion. After some contemplation, he decided to build a mausoleum unmatched in the world. He expressed this idea and asked, “Whom should I build the mausoleum for?” Kermani immediately replied, “For Ahmed.” Three Ahmeds are buried here. One was a ruling khan, the second was a military leader, and the third was a preacher of Islam. No one is coming to read the Quran at the graves of the first two. However, many come to spend the night at the grave of Khoja Ahmed and pay their respects. When did the wisdom he wrote spread among the people? “If I build a mausoleum at Khoja Ahmed’s grave, won’t my own reputation also rise, won’t it wash away my misdeeds?” Another reason for this decision was that his mother, Saqipjamal, who brought him into this world, was buried in front of this mausoleum. Those who come here also pray for her. This feeling captivated Amir Timur and inspired him to build the mausoleum. He gathered skilled builders from the lands under his control, prepared construction materials, and began the work. While the walls of the grand, massive building were being erected and they were preparing to install the dome, they were astonished to find that a miraculous force had destroyed everything overnight. This incident repeated itself when the mausoleum walls were being built and the dome was to be installed. He gathered the people and asked for the reason and what should be done. Then a young man named Baishigir said: – My ancestors appeared to me in a dream last night. Ahmed Yasawi is a disciple of Arystan Bab. Arystan Bab is not the beloved companion of my Prophet Muhammad, a trusted friend and confidant? How can they be building a mausoleum for his disciple before building one for Arystan Bab? – he expressed his displeasure. Amir Timur was convinced by Baishigir’s words. – Indeed, it is so. I was mistaken; forgive me, O God, for my sin, – he prayed to Tengri. He halted the ongoing construction and began to erect the mausoleum for Arystan Bab. After that, he took on the task of building the mausoleum for Ahmed Yasawi. The good deed he started was continued and completed by his descendants. The khan, impressed by Baishigir’s wisdom and foresight, asked: – What is your wish? – and he replied: – I ask that my remains be buried inside this mausoleum. – Amir Timur, in front of the people, declared: – I grant your wish. From now on, your name shall be called “Baishigir Baba”!
