Asanqayğı and Az Janibek (Version IV)
Aсанқайғы did not put a ram with the sheep, did not breed a stallion with the horses, did not let the bull rest, kept the cow safe from the bull, and led the livestock away for three years. On the way, he encountered the Khan of the Nogai, Az Zhanibek. Previously, when he had been invited to three feasts, Aсанқайғы had not attended. Since they met while he was on the move, he told Az Zhanibek: – Once there was a Khan. Next to the Khan, there lived a poor man. The poor man took some milk from the Khan's livestock and got a bit of fat and a sack of curds. In autumn, when the people were about to settle in the mountains, the poor man, fearing he would lose his home, told his wife: “Let’s invite the Khan to taste this curd and fat. Then what remains for us will be plentiful. If we don’t let the Khan taste it, it will bring us no fortune,” he said. When he invited the Khan to his home, the Khan's wife, feeling ashamed to enter the poor man's house, kept saying, “I’m going, I’m going,” but in the end, she did not go. The poor man and his wife waited for a long time, anxiously hoping to let the Khan's wife taste the curd and fat. One day, when the Khan's wife went out and was returning from the yard, the Khan's bull chased her. In her fright, she ran to the poor man's house. Then the poor man said: – The Khan’s wife, who would not come when called, Was brought back by the bull. Without any hesitation, She was brought back directly. Come on, my wife, taste your curd, Come on, my wife, let’s have your fat, – he said. Just as I invited you to three feasts, you did not come. You came without honor, without a foot, my Aсан! – You speak the truth, my Az Zhanibek! Your thoughts have turned to women, – said Aсанқайғы, – you were a person who could not control your own wisdom and actions. That’s why you are saying this; do you know why you held a feast? You held the first feast, saying you married the beautiful Karashash from the Karakalpaks. You held the second feast, saying you built a house where the wind does not blow by the Ural River. You held the third feast, saying you caught a fox in a trap. Why should I come to that? – and Aсан began to sing: – Oh, Khan Zhanibek! If I don’t tell you, you won’t know, Your people are scattered, You don’t see the land you should protect. Drinking kumys, you get red, Getting drunk, you sweat. As if there is no other Khan but you, Why do you boast? You built a fortress with toil, While your servants are eating and drinking. Ten Nogai have perished, Why don’t you know this? You took a woman from the common folk, You lost the customs of the Khanate. You won’t find a son to hold the land, You will lose the ancestral heritage, Why don’t you know this? The fox was a servant of the bird, The mouse ate its fur. The swan is the queen of birds, It was grazing in the lake. Many enemies lurking, Are coming as foes to your land. Your servant will come and kill you, Aсан knows this, Why don’t you know this? I saw this in my dream, Even if told, you won’t know. Oh, Zhanibek! If you think, Will there not be various times, Will the white pike swimming in the water Not strike the top of the pine? Why don’t you know this? If you don’t heed the words spoken, You will not see me again! – he said. The Khan did not say anything other than nodding his head to what Aсанқайғы said. That day, they became friends and took the orphan Janali with them.
