Zhirenshe the Wise
Once upon a time, there was a wise man named Jirenche. When he was still unmarried, he met a man and they set off on a journey together. His companion was an old man. After traveling for a while, Jirenche said,
– Grandpa, let’s shorten the road. The old man did not respond favorably. After traveling a bit more, he said,
– Let’s change horses. But the old man remained silent. When it was around noon, they came across a village where a group of people was carrying a dead body. The old man recognized the deceased. Jirenche asked the old man,
– Is the person who just died dead or alive? The old man retorted,
– If he were alive, would they be carrying him? Jirenche then continued to follow the old man. Along the way, he asked another question.
– Grandpa, do you have a brother, have you eaten his fruits? The old man thought Jirenche was a fool. Jirenche decided to follow the old man wherever he went. By evening, they arrived at a village. The house belonged to the old man. A young girl ran out to greet them and helped the old man down from his horse. She brought Jirenche inside and seated him next to the old man. He looked around, murmuring to himself,
“Yes, he seems to be a long-lived man. His wealth and appearance suit him well, but his window is a bit crooked.” Upon hearing this, the old man kicked Jirenche out of his house. The girl asked the old man,
– Why did you kick him out? The old man replied,
– He is quite a fool. On the way here, he said, “Grandpa, let’s shorten the road.” After a while, he said, “Let’s change horses.” Then, after passing a village, he asked, “Is he dead or alive?” After leaving that village, he asked, “Grandpa, do you have a brother? Have you eaten his fruits?” And even after entering the house, he said, “He seems to be a man of wealth and appearance. Only his window is a bit crooked.” I kicked him out of the house.
After hearing this, the girl explained everything to her father.
– When he said let’s shorten the road, he meant to say let’s have a conversation to make the road shorter. When he said let’s change horses, he meant let’s saddle our horses again. And when he asked if the old man was dead or alive, he was inquiring if he had children or not. When he asked if you have a brother, he was asking if you have married off a daughter or brought in a daughter-in-law. And when he said your window is crooked, he meant even though you are old, you seem to know nothing, – the girl explained to her father. Upon realizing this, the old man apologized to Jirenche and gave his daughter to him as a wife.
