Jirenche
One day, Khan Az Zhanibek, in consultation with his minister Jirenshe, considered how to collect taxes without upsetting the people and discussed the appropriate ways and who should be taxed. He concluded that it would be lawful to collect from only three types of people among the subjects under his rule (with the aim of preventing the public from being upset if taxes were levied on everyone without justification). He summoned all those with black beards and white hair, as well as those without beards and mustaches, in three separate groups, asking them why they had such differences in appearance. If their answers were not satisfactory, he planned to impose a tax on each of them as a penalty. However, if they managed to provide a worthy justification, he intended to reward them with horses and robes from the treasury. Of course, the Khan and the minister knew well that there would be no fewer people gathered than the aforementioned three types. They also hoped that the summoned individuals would not find satisfactory answers to the questions posed. Thus, Khan Az Zhanibek issued a decree a week prior, stating, "All those with black beards and white hair must gather!" He warned that those who did not come would face death and their property would be confiscated. The summoned individuals with black beards and white hair, not knowing why they were called, gathered in confusion and sought advice from Kose, the son of the Raven. Kose told them: – The Khan and Jirenshe are not my friends. If I teach you, they will complain. If they hear what I teach, they will punish me mercilessly. You might tell someone, – he warned them firmly. The individuals with black beards and white hair gathered in large numbers around Kose, saying: – Whatever you wish, grant us, just save us from this! – and they did not leave. Finally, Kose told them: – Do not reveal anything to anyone outside, keep your mouths shut! Do not give me anything! But after your answers to the Khan's questions are satisfactory, he will undoubtedly reward you. Just give me the Khan's gift. Do not give me anything else! – and he taught them how to respond to the Khan's question: – The Khan will gather you and ask: "Your beards are black, your hair is white, what have you gained from the people?" – he said. Then you should say: "Our beards appeared when we turned twenty-five. Our hair is twenty-five years older than our beards. Therefore, in another twenty-five years, our hair will also turn white, O Master!" – he instructed. Thus, Kose's taught response was deemed complete, and the Khan rewarded them... After losing the question, the Khan, feeling aggrieved, one day issued another decree to gather those with white beards and black hair to ask them questions. The members of this group were also confused and sought advice from Kose, the son of the Raven, who taught them in the same manner as before. – The Khan will gather you and ask: "What situation have you encountered that is different from the people, with your beards white and your hair black?" – he said. Then you should say: A woman is old, a child is young, Clothes are torn, food is scarce. With gritting teeth, My beard and mustache have turned white, – he instructed. On the day of gathering, the individuals with white beards and black hair provided their appropriate responses to the Khan's questions, and they escaped unharmed. The Khan, having lost the question again, reluctantly distributed the appropriate rewards. The individuals with white beards and black hair brought all the gifts they received from the Khan to Kose, the son of the Raven. Now, for the third group, the Khan issued a decree to gather those without beards and mustaches to ask them questions, summoning them all for a day just like the previous groups. All the summoned individuals were confused and came to seek advice from Kose, the son of the Raven. Kose told them: – I am also summoned along with you. I will answer the Khan's question regarding the Koses myself. You just stay calm. But if we escape the Khan's question and receive rewards, do not expect anything from me! – he reassured the Koses. On the day of gathering, after all the Koses arrived, the Khan seated them in rows and asked: – You are created as men, yet your appearances are like women. No beards, no mustaches. What situation have you encountered that is different from the people? – he inquired. At that moment, among the seated Koses, Kose, the son of the Raven, stood up, asked for permission from the Khan, and responded: – My father is old, my mother is young. His clothes are torn, his food is scarce. My father's strength has diminished compared to my mother's. Therefore, my backside resembles my father, my chest resembles my mother, and I have not grown a beard or mustache, O Master! – he said. Hearing this, all the Koses echoed: "Our situation is the same!" – they exclaimed. The Khan, satisfied with the logical response, stopped and distributed the appropriate rewards and gifts to the Koses. Khan Az Zhanibek and Jirenshe, having been outsmarted by Kose, the son of the Raven, who found valid answers to their questions, became a part of the old tales that have been passed down as examples among the people.
