Khan Az Zhanibek was sitting on the right bank of the Syr. One day he issued a decree to the people on the left bank of the Syr: "My mares are giving birth, the sound of the stallions has disturbed me, let them kill the stallions!" The people, frightened by the Khan's decree, panicked and gathered to discuss. Among the gathered crowd, a wise man stood up and said: "Do not panic! I will answer the Khan. Give me one camel, one wooden bowl, an old man with black hair and a white beard, an old man with white hair and a black beard, and one ram!" The people found everything he asked for. Then the wise man set off to the Khan. Upon reaching the edge of the Khan's village, he asked, "How does one meet the Khan?" Leaving his mount behind, he called out from a distance: "Salam Alaikum, dear!" The wise man did not follow what he said, but rode his camel with his companions to the Khan's house and shouted three times: "Speak, oh!" No one responded. "It seems this fellow has come under a blue canopy," he then dismounted, seated the two old men on either side, and lay down with his elbow propped up in the middle. He tied the ram and let his camel kneel. The Khan, angry at the wise man's actions, sent someone to say: "Take the old man's head!" The person sent by the Khan, seeing the wise man's posture, returned to the Khan: "His sitting position is quite amusing, he is a cunning wise man, with two old men on either side, a ram tied up, and his camel kneeling, while he is lying with his elbow propped up. I did not think it appropriate to behead him." Hearing this, the Khan came to where the wise man was lying. As the Khan approached, the wise man, still propped up on his elbow, said: – Salam Alaikum, dear Khan! – The Khan replied: – Oh, wise man, how is your camel riding? The wise man said: – I think riding a camel helps me see what is happening in my land and keeps me safe from danger. The Khan asked: – Why do you compare a wooden bowl to a camel? The wise man replied: – Is a wooden bowl not suitable for a camel? The Khan continued: – Oh, wise man, how is it that you are carrying a ram? The wise man said: – Oh, Khan, do you not know? The Khan replied: – I do not know. The wise man said: – You are like a child... "The best livestock is a ram, and the best person is a spoiled one." The Khan asked: – Oh, wise man, what about the old man with white hair and a black beard? The wise man replied: – Isn't the white hair twenty-five years older than the beard? That is why it has turned white. The Khan asked: – And what about the old man with black hair and a white beard? The wise man explained: – This one is a lazy man, his wife is bad; when he rides, he kicks, and when he stays at home, he sulks, that is why his beard has turned white. The Khan whispered to his men: – He must have a hole under his arm, he has been talking too much, let’s see if we can dunk him in water and check under his arm, – he said. The Khan asked: – Oh, Wise Man, will you go into the water? The wise man replied: – Let’s go. While others went into the water, the wise man and the Khan stayed behind, and the Khan said to the wise man: – Will you not go in, Wise Man? The wise man replied: – If you give me your hand, I will go in. The Khan said: – I will give it, go! – and the Khan himself entered the water. The wise man was tying up the sleeves of his shirt and the legs of his trousers. Then the Khan asked: – Oh, Wise Man, why are you tying up and bundling? – The wise man replied: – Do you know why this water is called "Syr"? – The Khan said: – I do not know. The wise man explained: – Oh, Khan, you are like a child. Once, while sitting by this water, sixty knives were sharpened, and while they were conversing, the water flooded, and all sixty were lost to the water. At that time, the knife and needle handles were facing down, while their faces and tips were facing up, and they settled at the bottom of the water. That is why I am tying and bundling up, fearing those knives and needles, – he said. The Khan came out of the water and said: – Take him to the red dogs! – The Khan's men took the wise man and threw him among the red dogs. Until dawn, he killed forty red dogs that had attacked him. Then the Khan asked: – Have you returned safely, Wise Man? – One of the Khan's men stood up and said: – Safe or not, he has killed the red dogs. – The Khan asked: – Oh, Wise Man, will you return? – The wise man replied: – I will not return, I will meet Zhirenshe. The Khan said: – No, Wise Man, do not look at Zhirenshe, I will send him away, – he said. The wise man insisted: – No, you will not send him. The Khan said: – I will send him, oh Wise Man, how is it that you killed the red dogs? The wise man explained: – The wolves have been killing our village's sheep every day, since they are of no use, how could I not kill the red dogs? The Khan replied: – Our village is on the near side of the Syr, your village is on the far side, how could the wolf do anything, how could it protect? – The wise man countered: – Then how did the sound of our stallions reach your mares? – The Khan could not respond. The wise man walked away. After that, Zhirenshe came to the Khan. The Khan recounted the wise man's arrival and his words from start to finish. Zhirenshe said: "I will go to him," but the Khan warned: "Oh no, do not go, he is not to be trusted, he seems to be a cunning wise man," – he said. Unable to bear it, Zhirenshe followed the wise man. Zhirenshe caught up with the wise man and greeted him, but the wise man did not respond. Then he approached from the side and greeted him, but still did not look. Finally, he came in front and greeted him, and the wise man accepted his greeting. After they spoke and exchanged pleasantries, Zhirenshe asked: – I greeted you from behind, but you did not accept it, what is the reason? The wise man replied: – Someone was barking at me from behind. Zhirenshe asked: – Why did you not accept it when I greeted you from the side? The wise man explained: – Someone would speak like a woman from the side; a true man’s character is to greet face to face, that is why I accepted the greeting given to me from the front, – he said. Zhirenshe asked: – Oh, Wise Man, where is the center of the earth? The wise man replied: – Oh, I am riding a camel and cannot predict the center of the earth; if you lend me your horse, I will tell you the center of the earth, – he said. Zhirenshe dismounted and lent him his horse. The wise man mounted the horse, led the camel, and wandered this way and that, and after a while he said: "The center of the earth is a hill, the center of the people is to see," and after predicting, he looked and said, "Your place is the center of the earth," – he said, and with a slap on the horse's back, he rode off without looking at Zhirenshe. On his way back to his village, the wise man came across a girl milking a mare at the edge of a village and said: – May your milking increase, oh fair lady! – The girl replied: – If I stand, it will improve, but it is not your mouth that will do it, – she said. – May God cut your tongue! – and with that, he slapped the horse's back and rode away.
