The tall and stately man Esim
When the exemplary khans of the Kazakh people used to speak, they would say: "The old way of Khan Esim, the straight way of Khan Kasim." This Khan Esim was the grandson of Khan Jadik, one of the nine sons of Az Zhanibek. When he was the khan of the Kazakh people, the capital was the city of Turkistan. During his time, the Khan of the Qatagan people in Tashkent, Khan Tursyn, sent an envoy to Khan Esim, saying: – Let us live in harmony and sweetness. I will withstand the enemy coming from the west. You will stand against the enemy from the east. Take troops from me, take supplies, take equipment, and then descend from the head of the Great Ertis and emerge at its foot! From then on, the land will be ours, – said Tursyn Khan. Khan Esim replied: – Alright, if it is to be, then so be it. I will not take troops from you, nor supplies, nor equipment. My own strength is sufficient for me. Just keep an eye on my remaining people, – and after agreeing with Tursyn Khan, he set off with a thousand men towards the east, saying, "I will descend from the head of the Great Ertis and emerge at its foot." On his way, while crossing the Saryarka, he saw a lone black figure by the river Shiderti. – What kind of person wanders in a deserted place? It must be a beast. If it is a beast, it looks large. It might be a wild horse, – he thought, and tied up his horses, intending to rest. Thus, that black figure was not a wild horse but a sentry of the Kalmyks. While they were resting carelessly, the horses were driven away. They were left stranded in the wilderness. The horse that Khan Esim rode was Alabel, And the black figure of Shiderti stood tall. They mistook that black figure for a "wild horse," And tied up their horses. They ran this way and that. They climbed one hill, then another. But what does it matter? If they wanted to fly, they had no wings; if they wanted to chase the enemy, they had no horse. They lay sprawled in the vast steppe. For about nine days, they wandered this way and that. They found nothing. On the tenth day, the tall and strong Khan Esim said: – Come, lads, let us not die lying in the barren yellow steppe. Is there anyone who will accompany me to pursue the enemy? – At this, everyone began to chatter: – We will not be left alone; we will all accompany you. After being separated from you, will we not die of hunger in the wilderness? It is better to trust and follow you to our deaths, – they said. – When you accompany me, I can reach in one day the place where a mounted man would take ten days. Come on, is there anyone capable of such a journey? – he asked. Then one person stood up and said: – I can reach in five days, – he said. Another stood up and said: – I can reach in ten days, – he said. The others said: – If we reach the place where a mounted man would take ten days in the month ahead and the year behind, is that bad? – they said. Then Khan Esim said: – Come, warriors, each of you take a stick. And gather one stick for each person in one place. Those who return safely from the enemy, take your sticks from where you placed them. The number of those who remain and those who return will be known from that, – he said. – Now, if I set out from this place today, I will reach the place where the Kalmyk will be after ten days of travel and will spend the night there. After reaching the ten-day distance, the Kalmyk will not move; he will rest, thinking, "Will a foot traveler ever reach a ten-day distance?" Even if I reach, I will not engage the enemy, nor harm anyone. I will wait for you who can come in five days. I will wait for you who can come in ten days. When the exact ten days have passed, when it is said, "Those two have arrived!" if I mount my blue horse at night, I will attack the enemy with a shout. If I do not mount my blue horse, then may you all be safe. Know that this is the beginning and end of our meeting. Well, farewell! – and Khan Esim rolled up his sleeves and set off in pursuit of the Kalmyks. The other two followed him. As he had said, when the sun set and darkness fell, he reached the place where the Kalmyks had barely arrived after ten days. When he arrived, the Kalmyk's heavy troops had fortified themselves in a hollow. They surrounded the hollow. They leaned against each other, pitched their tents, and put both the horses taken from the enemy and their own horses inside the hollow, setting fires that blazed like stars, feasting on meat. Being taller than the grass and shorter than the sagebrush, he held onto a single shrub and entered the thick of the hollow in the moonless dark night, but could not find the blue horse all night long. When dawn broke, he found a solid part of the hollow, killed one of the Kalmyk's horses for food, and made a pot from its belly, cooking it freely and eating it. At night, he searched through the hollow, looking for the blue horse. During the day, he rested. Thus, he spent nine days. "Now, if I capture the blue horse in one day and do not attack the enemy at night, it would be disgraceful to come to the Kalmyks with the two footmen and confess in fear," he thought, and on the night of the tenth day, while desperately searching through the hollow, he found that the Kalmyk khan had pitched his camp on an island in the middle of the hollow, and the blue horse was tied inside the camp, resting its head on the threshold. They said that if a shout arose, they would not let anything escape, tearing it to pieces. The fame of Khan Esim's blue horse had already become well-known among the Kalmyks. At that moment, the Kalmyks sitting in the tent were eating meat. After finishing their meal, when their knives fell to the ground, one of the Kalmyks looked at the shoulder blade and said: – Oh my, – he said, – the tall and strong Khan Esim must have come. Today he must be wandering around asking, "Where is the blue horse?" – he said. At that very moment, Khan Esim was sitting close behind the blue horse. – Is it true? – one of them quickly looked and asked, – Is the tall and strong Khan Esim in front of or behind the blue horse? – At that, I quickly thought that they would look out, so I slipped under the blue horse's belly. They had no idea that I could come so far on foot. They were joking and teasing about the shoulder blade. Another one looked and said: – What are you all talking about? The tall and strong Khan Esim is either under or above the blue horse himself, – when he said this, thinking they would look out, I cut the tether where it was tied and mounted the blue horse, standing still to see what they would say. Then one of the Kalmyks looked at the shoulder blade and said: – The tether is left, and the blue horse is gone; if you don't believe me, pull your tether, – he said. He pulled his tether, and I shouted, chasing the round-hoofed horses in the hollow, leaving nothing behind. The two footmen who followed also waited for him. They mounted one horse together and came to their many companions who had survived. The place where they had cut the sticks became known as Myntayak. During that journey, they went far, and the remaining companions were left behind, those who returned came back, those who died perished, and in the end, only forty men remained. While heading back to Turkistan, they heard along the way that Khan Tursyn had come with his troops, raiding the abandoned lands, causing a terrible massacre, and had taken Turkistan for himself. When the tall and strong Khan Esim heard this, he became furious, and in a fit of rage, he went mad. His companions tried to hold him back, but they could not; he threw some this way and some that way, and all forty companions were exhausted, gasping for breath. After a while, Khan Esim calmed down, collapsed, and then raised his head and asked: – What has happened to me? – his companions replied: – You were in a fit of madness, you were in a bad state, – they said. – Then why didn’t you tie me up? – he asked. – Even if we all tried to hold you down, we could not, – they said. – Was it just me? – he asked. – Just you; even if we all tried, we could not, – they said. – Then if I went mad alone and the forty of you were no better than flies, if all of you went mad like me, then the whole world would be no better than frost. Come, warriors, let us all go mad together and march to Tashkent. Come on, – and they set off towards the city of Tashkent, entering with the momentum they had built up, beating Khan Tursyn like a dog, killing him in disgrace, and causing a terrible massacre among the Qatagan people. The saying "Khan Tursyn of the Qatagan, may he be cursed!" originated from that time. After that, the name "Qatagan" disappeared. The few that remained were absorbed into the Kangly and Shanyshky tribes, and the descendants of the remaining people are said to have survived among those two tribes. During a time of famine, that blue horse was sold for a single offspring, and the saying "Khan Esim's blue horse was also a single offspring" originated from that. For this reason, the Kazakh people say, "The head is split from the tail." Khan Kasim, on the other hand, was the legitimate son of Az Zhanibek. After Khan Jochi, it was this Khan Kasim who took many people. He was the one who became a khan for the Kazakhs, not just for the Kazakhs, but in the end, he ruled over many people.
