Eskeldi's Mission to the Embassy (Abilay Khan's Summoning of Eskeldi)
"The Great Disaster, the Collapse of the Alakol" began in the youth of Abilai. Abilai Ualievich became the khan of the Middle Horde in 1750. Among those who elevated him to khan were the khans and nobles: Juzali, Karasha, Abilqayir, and Akhtanberli. ...Once, the Kalmyks gathered a large army and fought against Abilai again. Abilai, confused and panicked, seeing the enemy's superiority and not knowing what to do, gathered the leaders, nobles, and heroes, as well as the elders and old men of the people, to hold a council. – Give us advice, what should we do? – he said. Then an elder stood up: – We have neither cunning nor wisdom, but even so, it is not right for us to keep suffering losses; let us seek a way to pause the war for a few years. There is a wise man named Eskeldi Zhilkeldievich from the Uly Juz Zhalayir, who has come from Syirshy. Let us call him, – he said. Abilai immediately summoned Eskeldi. Then he said: – Do not be anxious, my khan, give me fifty knowledgeable men. I will stop Kaldan, – he said. Thus, he took fifty men with him and went on a diplomatic mission. When he arrived, the Kalmyk khan did not take him seriously. Eskeldi explained his purpose to Kaldan: – When I speak, the elders used to say that Kazakhs and Kalmyks are one kin. They also say that even if relatives have grievances against each other, they cannot wish death upon one another. Both sides have acted in anger and have sent many of our young men to their deaths. To the past – peace, to the future – hope. In our land, there is a good saying: "The root of a dispute is settled by a girl, the bottom of a river is settled by mud, and the end of an enemy is settled by words." Let us reconcile by either taking a girl or giving one, let us come to peace. Since the time of Genghis Khan, our path has been great. You give a girl, and we will pay the bride price, let us not frown at each other, let us be a nation. Let us be bound to one mother! – he said. Then Kaldan Khan replied: – Your words are warm and suitable for leading a nation; you must be blessed. If I give a girl, I will give her either to you or to Abilai. You decide which way it goes, – he said. Then Eskeldi responded: – Your eyes are like an eagle, Your words are like gold. My nation has good customs, Think about them. If a khan takes the road, Stay away from such a person. Do not give your daughter to me, Give her to Abilai! – Kaldan was very pleased and said: – Then quickly send Abilai, I will let him choose a girl, you come along! – After that, Kaldan Khan dressed forty young men as girls and paraded them in front of Abilai. Eskeldi was aware of this. He had previously told Abilai, "You will place a diamond on the head of the girl according to my instructions." Now the Kalmyks brought forth forty brides. Abilai was taken aback. However, since there was no instruction from Eskeldi, he remained still. Then Kaldan brought forth the forty girls, and the fourth one was his own daughter. At that moment, Eskeldi said: – Do not look until the third one, value the fourth! – Abilai took the girl by the wrist. Kaldan said: – If it weren't for this young man, you would not have found my daughter; a khan with such a wise man is fortunate! – and he gave his daughter, named Menqandan, along with his son Mamyt. Then he looked at Eskeldi and said: – Look at my eyes, you have a quality, Those who oppose you will find their path narrow. Those who insult you will suffer before the eyes, Looking at you, your ambition is beyond Alatau. May all your paths be successful, and may you be known as Kazakh! – and he wished him good fortune.
