The meeting of Eskeldi and Karamende bi.
The raiders from the Argin people across the Balkhash came and killed a horseman from the Jalayir, driving away his horses. The news spread, and before long, the ice melted, preventing the pursuers from following. A year later, the good people of the Jalayir gathered and consulted with the matriarch Daraboz. Daraboz, a wise and deep-thinking woman, listened to their requests and said: – My dear brothers, sisters, you have come a long way. My matter is a woman, what more can I say? Nevertheless, to ensure you do not go hungry, take your provisions back. Also, take our white-headed stallion. Though young, he has the vigor of youth; make my brother Esekeldi a noble leader. Inshallah, you will not regret it, – she said. Thus, twenty people were selected from the Jalayir and mounted their horses. Esekeldi was said to be eighteen at the time. When the travelers arrived, the children of Argin were raising the roof of a twelve-yurt house from horseback, setting up the poles. – Wow, what a grand house this is, – said a Jalayir man, who had no thoughts in his mind. One of the Argin youths overheard him and quipped: – I suppose your people mainly live in yurts, – he teased. The careless guest bit his finger in regret. As the Jalayirs settled in and the Argin waited, Daraboz's white-headed stallion stretched its neck out from the roof, peeking in. A somewhat absent-minded young man from the Argin remarked: – Astapyralla, it seems a great stallion can be born in such a manner! Esekeldi, quick to respond, shot back: – When your people move, do they load their houses onto camels? – he retorted. This was during the time of the famous Karamende bi, whose name was known throughout the six nations. The insightful and discerning bi had a bowl of wheat porridge prepared, stirring it with a wooden spoon, and sent it to the guests. The guests looked at each other in astonishment. Esekeldi, acting swiftly, strained the porridge and served it to the elders. After mixing the porridge thoroughly with the spoon, he took a serving for himself, turned the spoon upside down, and returned it to the host. The village youths reported everything they saw to their elder. The village host then sent a heap of meat in a wooden trough. Esekeldi took the forehead of a foal and the head of a sheep in his hands and placed them at the edge of the table. Then he found the thighs of the sheep and foal among the meats, cut the meat from their hollows, and served it to the elders. Only then did he say: – Well, eat up! The village youths reported this to their elder without fail. The next day, Karamende bi ordered another slaughter: – Prepare the compensation for the stolen horses from the Jalayir and for the deceased person, – he commanded the Argin. No one dared to oppose Karamende, a revered man whose words were never questioned. Everything was done. However, some murmured, “What is this from Karamende? He has taken the Jalayir under his wing without a second thought.” Gathering those who spoke thus, Karamende bi said: – If the words find their order, the owner of the livestock must be found. What the Jalayir seeks is justice, the rightful compensation for their honest livestock and the life of their fallen man. We relied on force. We attempted to deny them equality, trusting in our numbers. But do you not see the justice of Allah Ta'ala? A wise child has been born among them. Now there is no room for our oppression. Yesterday, I sent a bowl of porridge with the spoon turned upside down. That was my way of saying, “Our wealth is with us, we lie on our backs. How can you claim equality?” The boy named Esekeldi strained the porridge with a spoon, served it to the elders, and when he returned the remaining, he turned the spoon upside down. That was his way of saying, “We have come to you turned upside down. Our elders will feast on your wealth. If you do not agree, our youth will gather, devour your provisions like porridge, and take away your remaining wealth, one feast leads to another!” When serving meat from the trough, I hid the thighs under the meat, saying, “The dispute has aged, you cannot revive it.” The boy Esekeldi placed the forehead and head on the table, turned the meat over, and found the hidden thighs. He served the meat from their hollows to the elders. This was his way of saying, “If you disregard my leaders, we will turn over your wealth and find your finest pieces to feed the elders.” There can be no greater wisdom or agreement than this. May God bless everyone with their honest and rightful livestock. Let there be no old, weak, or poor animals among those given! – he said, counting his livestock, and sent Esekeldi back with honor. From that time on, the kinship between Esekeldi and Karamende, the Jalayir and the children of Argin strengthened, and a good new relationship began, as the old wise men say.
