Khan Abilai
The true name of the illustrious khan Abilai is Abilmansur. Abilai is his ancestor. He was more inclined towards military action than governing the state. Therefore, people called him "the brave Abilai." When his father died, the path to the khanate belonged to his eldest son Abilai. However, his cunning younger brother managed to win over the nobles of the land and seized the khanate (This is the famous ancestor of Khan Abilmambet). According to the appropriate tradition, feeling resentful that he could not inherit his father's place, the brave Abilai moved to his maternal uncle Ghaip Khan in Urgench. The khan's nephew and brave Abilai lived honorably in Urgench. Later, after Ghaip Khan died, his relatives could not claim the khanate, and with fortune, wealth also left, making survival difficult. At this time, the young Abilmansur set out on foot to the Kazakh steppe, saying, "Saryarka is my land, Kazakh is my nation." He soon arrived in the thick of the Uysyn people. No one showed him compassion or took him in. He heard that there was a wise man named Tole Bi who had mercy on people, especially the weak. He went to him. "Dear child, who are you, and what work can you do?" asked the bi. "I am Kazakh. Whatever work you assign, I will do," replied the boy. "Whose son are you, and what is your name?" To this question, Abilmansur replied: "I am your son; you be my father. Let the name you give me be my name." To the tattered and dirty boy with messy hair, Tole Bi fittingly named him "Sabalak." He bathed him, dressed him in proper clothes, and he became a handsome young man. He was assigned the duty of tending to camels. As his service pleased the bi, Sabalak was later transferred to the position of a horse herder. His trust increased. One day, a great battle broke out between the Kazakhs and the Kalmyks. The men went off to the battlefield. Sabalak asked his grandfather for permission to join the campaign. The bi did not want to let him go. "It is better for you to quietly tend to the livestock than to go to the bloodshed, my son," he said. To this, Sabalak quickly replied: "It is better for a man to die than to be left behind while the flag flutters and the ground trembles, grandfather!" He openly expressed his desire to join the campaign. Sensing that his son was boiling with anger towards the enemy and ready to sacrifice his life for the honor of the nation, the bi could not say anything more. "May your path be blessed, my son!" he said, giving him his blessing and sending him off. In the battle, Sharysh, the son of his chief minister Shontazh, who was born of Galdan Tsiren's daughter, stepped forward for a duel. No one dared to face him, and it seemed that Khan Abilmambet and the entire Kazakh army were at a dead end. Sabalak approached the khan, knelt, clasped his hands, and asked for permission to duel Sharysh. The khan, seeing that no brave man from his ranks stepped forward, did not even ask who he was, granted permission, and expressed his good wishes. As soon as Sabalak went forth, he lifted Sharysh and shouted, "Abilai, Abilai! Be my ally, Abilai!" He struck him down to the ground, severed his head, and shouted, "The enemy has fled!" The Kalmyk group fled in disarray, and the Kazakhs pursued them, wreaking havoc on their enemies. The Kazakh group returned with a lot of spoils and set their course homeward, stopping at a comfortable place. The animals were unburdened, and tents were pitched. The khan called the fortunate young man from the battlefield and asked who he was. Then he gathered his biys and batyrs and recounted the events from start to finish. "This young man is my great-grandson," he began, "his ancestor, the brave Abilai, was the brother of my ancestor. My ancestor wronged his ancestor. Upset by this, he moved to another land. I had heard that there was a relative of the brave Abilai. This young man is that relative. The path to the khanate belongs to him; I have given it to my relative. From now on, let this young man, who has brought great victory under the name of our ancestor, Abilai, be the khan of the Kazakh people!" As it happened, the gathered crowd unanimously approved this noble initiative. However, they said, "He is still young; his elder brother is present; for now, let him be the sultan, the assistant to the khan." Following Abilmambet's proposal, representatives were sent to Tole Bi, the grandfather of Sabalak, with gifts to seek his approval. The people who went received his consent and brought him back, and they included his son in the joyful celebration of the sultan's elevation.
