Abilai's Captivity (Version I)
After the Kalmyk people gathered their forces, they sought Abilay, who had killed the hero Sharysh and plunged his nation into great distress. After a long search, they finally captured Abilay in a surprise attack while he was asleep among the hills of Ulytau and handed him over to Khan Galdan. The Kazakh people sent several of their notable figures to the Kalmyks but could not free Abilay. They appealed to Empress Catherine of Russia for help. She sent a group of representatives led by General Nefeldiev to the Kalmyks. Along the way, ninety Kazakh nobles joined them, and they arrived at Galdan's court. The Kalmyks did not question them and continued to treat them as honored guests. Thus, three months passed. One day, the Kalmyk khan gathered the Russian and Kazakh guests, his own nobles and heroes, and other notable figures at the khan's court. Galdan Tsere announced that he intended to punish Abilay, who was held captive. – I have ordered your punishment in front of the nobles of the three nations, – he said to Abilay, – you will die in place of my beloved nephew, the son of my chief minister, the esteemed hero of the entire Kalmyk nation, Sharysh. What is your wish? As soon as the khan finished speaking, Abilay asked for a final word. Permission was granted. – I have three wishes, my lord, – he began, – my first wish: I killed the hero Sharysh in the khan's court of the Kalmyks and Kazakhs. Yet you have captured me while I was asleep and intend to kill me. I regret not dying in battle against a stronger opponent in the khan's court. The second: the Kazakh people were a scattered, nomadic nation. In my days of high honor, I dreamed of settling that nation and nurturing the seed of culture among them. I could not achieve that dream. My third wish: I am a descendant of the hero Abilay. I am the only one from that lineage, and I am still unmarried. I worry, “If I die now, it will be as if four generations have not been born since Abilay!” Galdan said to his ministers: – What he says is true; all his words are reasonable. Especially his third wish has stirred my heart. I too am the only one from four generations. If Amir Sanam were to perish, it would be as if my four ancestors had not been born. Hearing this, Abilay jumped up from his place: – My lord, Aldiyar, – he said. – Why do you call me Aldiyar? I have not saved you from punishment, – said Khan Galdan. – You have not released me, my lord, but you have equated me with your only son, Amir Sanam! – Abilay bowed his head. The conversation ended there. Khan Galdan forgave Abilay's sins, made him a friend of Amir Sanam, and gave him a girl from the royal lineage, naming her "Kundebau" (unbreakable friendship). From this girl, Qasym was born. He sent the Russian and Kazakh representatives who had come to inquire about Abilay back with great gifts. * * * One day, while Abilay was held captive by the Kalmyks, Galdan Tsere summoned him to his presence and inquired mostly about the economic and domestic situation of the Kazakh people. – Are there many sheep in your land? – to which Abilay replied: – There are many, my lord! – Galdan continued: – Then it would be said that "the sheep are thieves, and the shepherds are liars," and your people’s petty thefts and quarrels will not cease anytime soon. – Are there many cattle in your land? – to which Abilay also replied: – There are many, my lord! – The khan remarked: – If there are many cattle, a nation that eats meat and drinks milk without labor will give birth to foolish children! – Does the Kazakh people engage in agriculture? – Galdan asked. Abilay answered this question straightforwardly: – Our nation is nomadic, and therefore does not engage in agriculture, – he said. – Then, a nation that does not suckle from the breast of the earth will continue to be overturned and turned upside down, – concluded Galdan.
