The captivity of Abilai (Version V)
In Kalmykia, there was a khan named Kaldan Sherin. He had a wife named Karabas. He had a single son named Ejen (Aizhan). The khan of the Karakalpaks, Khatysban, was known as "Kongtazhy." The khan of the Kalmyks, old Ayuke-Tipsire, was the son of Shabdarshap, and he was known for the saying "Ten Oymauits, Nine Torgauits." Besides these, there were notable figures named Rusa and Seren (Syrang) known as "The Black Willow of the Thief." The most significant among them was Kaldan Sherin, and during his reign, all the Kalmyks looked up to him. When Kaldan Sherin was in power, the Kalmyks raided the Kazakhs, taking countless livestock and many widows. After that, the Kazakhs set out to negotiate peace. At that time, Kaldan Sherin ordered Karabas to ride out and: - "Go among the Kazakhs and bring me someone who is worthy to speak with me! If there is no one worth talking to, tell them not to tire their horses or wear out their coats," he sent her off. Karabas rode out, observed, and selected four individuals. One was Baltakerey Tursynbay, another was Shakshakuly Zhanibek, the third was Kazybek with the voice of a goose, and the fourth was Taikeltyr, the son of Aydabol. - "What criteria did you use to bring them?" Kaldan Sherin asked. - "That one over there is Baltakerey Tursynbay. He has no ears, is short, and has an enemy at his nape. He fears no one but himself, and he is the eye of the blue-gray," she replied. "That one over there is Kazybek, sleeping among the horsemen, lying on his back with his arms and legs spread out, looking like a stretched blanket. This is his way of saying, 'I was born to support the four corners of the world'—he is blessed from head to toe. When he dies, the land he rests upon will be prosperous. That one over there is Taikeltyr. He has a split throat, an iron jaw, and the tip of his small tongue is forked. He is a nightingale that does not speak to a one-headed, two-legged creature. That one over there is Shakshakuly Zhanibek, a Kazakh outsider. He has his own bodyguard. He is the one who bites the fat of your toes and sets your ribs on fire." Then Kaldan Sherin said: - "If we kill them, it would be fine." Karabas replied: - "This is what they mean by 'The wisdom of the khan is equal to that of a child's finger!' What kind of people do you think they are? If you throw them into fire, they won't burn; if you throw them into water, they won't drown; if you shoot them, the bullet won't penetrate; if you strike them, the sword won't cut. They are beings whose outsides are steel and insides are iron!" - "Then we need to grant them full peace and send them back satisfied," he said, giving ninety widows to each warrior. In previous peace agreements, they would pay livestock. This time, they gave the four without payment. Then one woman said to Kazybek: - "Oh, my lords, I am being left behind!" Kazybek went back to Kaldan Sherin, spoke sweetly like a flute, and managed to get her back. It was later said that "Kazybek took one widow more than the others." Kazybek also remarked, "The bride recognizes the mustache beforehand!" Before Kaldan Sherin died, he gathered his people and spoke his will: - "Raise my only son Ejen as khan in my place. Do not approach him for three years! After three years, he will come to you like a falcon," he said. After Kaldan Sherin's death, Ejen was made khan. Ejen had two peculiar behaviors. One was that he would shoot any dog he saw, and the other was that he would shoot any girl or woman he encountered. His people became discontented, saying, "This one has gone mad." According to Kalmyk law, if a son dies, the father goes to collect the funeral, and if the father dies, the son collects the funeral. When Kaldan Sherin died, while Ejen was calling people for the funeral, at night, seven dark nights, dogs barked, preventing anyone from hearing, and the girls and women sang songs, making it impossible to hear. "I will take my revenge on you, dog, for three years, and on you, girl, for three years," he swore, and the people also swore to kill him. A Kalmyk critic said: - "This is no ordinary person; he is a khan's son. There is a spirit here. If you throw him into fire, your land will burn; if you throw him into water, your land will drown. No matter how you try to kill him, you will face great disaster." Then they heated metal, blinded him, and made him blind as a bat. After that, the Kalmyks fell into disarray and were utterly defeated. The saying "The khan was conquered by the Kalmyks, such a Kalmyk is worthless" became a proverb for future generations. According to Kalmyk law, "If a man takes two wives, the land will be ruined," so they do not take two wives. Kaldan Sherin had two wives. The reason is that the old Ayuke Tipsire, the son of Shabdarshap, who was the "king of ten Oymauits and nine Torgauits," sent his only daughter with forty maidens to Kaldan Sherin, saying, "Whoever he gives her to, the power is with Kaldan." On their way, winter came early, heavy snow fell, and they could not proceed. A Kazakh hunter shot an arrow, built a stone house for the girls, and since their transport was camels, he built a stone pen for the camels, hunted, and sustained them through the winter. Fearing Kaldan Sherin's wrath, they could not take the girls or the hunter, and when spring came, the girls headed towards Kaldan Sherin. One place where these girls spent the winter was in the mountains called Boktykent, near the Karakara region of the Karakol district. At the top of the mountain was a place known as "Red Mine." Our Kazakhs regarded "Red Mine" as sacred and often spent the night there. These girls went to Kaldan Sherin. They were more beautiful than anyone from the past. Not wanting to give them to others, Kaldan Sherin took them as concubines. He had a famous wife named Karabas, and from her, he had a single son named Ejen. In Kalmyk times, they did not take two wives. "If a man takes two wives, the land will be ruined," they said. The girl, not wanting to be a horse rider or a whip wielder, became pregnant and gave birth to a son, who was said to be "like a spear thrust into the road," and he was named Syna. The Syna who is known as "Syna the Brave" is this one. Ayuke's daughter bore Kaldan Sherin two daughters and two sons, named Barin, Topysh, Kyrgyn, and Kush. One night, while Kaldan Sherin was sitting in the dark outside, something fell with a splash on him. He brought it home, lit a light, and found it was an arrow with a tip made of metal. That metal was from Kaldan Sherin's own tree. He had ninety craftsmen, and when he gathered them, he asked: - "Who made this arrow?" One craftsman replied: - "I made it." - "Who ordered it?" he asked. - "Your beloved concubine's firstborn, Syna the Brave, had it made," he replied. He did not let anyone know anything. While he was sleeping, Syna the Brave was drugged, and they removed the cartilage from his right shoulder, applying the white medicine of a bear. At one time, Syna the Brave regained consciousness, lifted his head, and got up, but he had no idea what had happened. When he tried to shoot an arrow, he felt as if God had struck him from above and cried out, returning home in tears like a calf. His mother asked: - "What happened, who hurt you?" He replied: - "I am fine, there is no pain in my body, but I cannot shoot an arrow." - "My son, you have been struck. If you move, they will take your eyes and blind you. Do not stand up; you will lose your sight, and you cannot save your life among the Kalmyks! Go to your Kazakh people while you still can," she warned him about Kaldan Sherin's treachery. Syna the Brave fled and took refuge with Abilay. Kaldan Sherin, knowing that he would seek revenge wherever he went, could not find him. After hearing that he had taken refuge with Abilay, Kaldan Sherin sent an envoy: - "If you do not want to fight with me, I will remain peaceful; return Syna the Brave alive to me!" Abilay Khan replied: - "There is a saying, 'Even a sparrow hiding in a bush will remain.' If I am not worth even a bush, why should I be alive?" Kaldan Sherin called upon the Kalmyks and sent out a force called "The Hand of Suzekin": - "Do not watch from one place, but from everywhere, like fishing for fish in water, scour the entire Saryarka! Whoever brings Abilay to me alive, I will give them Topysh, the beauty born of Ayuke!" Upon hearing this, the notable figures were filled with determination and mounted their horses. One notable named Zhalby traveled with many troops, and there is a road known as "Zhalby Road" near the Tarbagatai and Shyngys mountains. They roamed all summer without finding him, and when winter came, while hunting with eagles in the Ulytau and Kishi tau mountains, they encountered a wandering hunter named Utegen and captured him, but he did not reveal anything. There was a poor guard named Tileuimbet who fell asleep, and thinking "we have a guard," he was caught along with his companions. When Abilay asked the warriors what they were doing, he learned that they had set out only for him and decided not to lead them into an ambush: - "The Abilay you are looking for is me," he said, and after finding Kaldan's troops, he felt as if he had found his lost horse. After hearing that Kaldan Sherin was coming to capture Abilay alive, he set up a white yurt in the middle of nowhere, decorated it as if for a wedding, and laid out bedding: - "Bring only Abilay inside," he ordered, "for seven days and seven nights, do not give him food or water, let him be hungry and weak. There is a saying, 'Do not ask for wisdom from a man who has been hungry for a day,'” he instructed. They did as he said. On the eighth day: - "Bring a bowl of plain water with a piece of fat and give it to him," he commanded. When they brought it and handed it to him, he said: - "You are something that will not run away from me; if I kiss you, you will not come to my mouth," and he threw the bowl from the top to the door. Those who saw it reported back: - "Indeed, he is a true nobleman, a genuine nobleman." - "Now, let four executioners cool their heads, and all four of you hold naked swords and shout: 'There is a decree from the khan, and a provision from the commoners. Your guest has arrived. If you do not eat what has been given, then drink your own blood!'" and they were sent off. When they arrived as Kaldan Sherin had instructed: - "I will not die from anyone but God," he said, sitting boldly without flinching, like a proud goat. - "This one has no soul. Would a living being not be afraid?!" they returned, reporting what they had seen: - "If shot, the bullet will not penetrate; if struck, the sword will not cut; if thrown into water, he will not drown; if thrown into fire, he will not burn; his outside is steel, and his inside is iron; he is a fool who is completely confident in himself." - "He has passed two tests; now one test remains. Let him be summoned here. 'The snow will be taken by the snow, the khan will be taken by the khan,' they used to say." "Among the gathered crowd of Kalmyks, I will cut off his head with my own hands, split him from behind, take his plea with my own hands, and drink his blood!" they said. Would he come in trembling, terrified, or would he come in without fear, calm and composed? This too is a test," they said. Kaldan Sherin had ninety guards, and he lined them up in rows. He himself got down from the throne, and one of the guards sat down as if counting. He left no space for anyone to sit from the throne to the door. He also said: - "When you enter, do not let any of you offer a place!" Kaldan Sherin had a throne, a special place made of stone for the khan. When Abilay Khan entered, there was no one on the throne, only a stone figure made to represent the khan. Abilay Khan, not looking around, saw the empty throne and went straight to it, sitting boldly in Kaldan Sherin's place. Sitting next to the figure was seen as a great insult, and the Kalmyks began to murmur. Then Abilay said: - "The good will compete for a good place, while the bad will lose their place." Am I not the bad one who would lose my place? There is a place for the khan on the throne; its spirit has fled, and my spirit and fortune have risen. Therefore, he has fled from this place. If the khan of the Kalmyks, Kaldan Sherin, does not sit here, and if the khan of the Kazakhs, Abilay, does not sit here, who else would sit here, the devil?" The Kalmyks looked at each other: - "What do we say to this? 'The shameless will argue over a noble word,'" they said. Kaldan Sherin realized he had been outsmarted: - "Oh, Abilay, where is Saru?" he asked. - "Saru did not say he was Saru, nor did he say he would not cut," they replied. He asked "Where is Saru?" three times, and each time they gave the same answer. Kaldan Sherin could not respond to them. - "I have been captured, I have become a mere mortal!" he thought. "If I die, I will have three regrets. One is that I killed Saru in battle. When you sent a call to the Kalmyks, I sent a call to all Kazakhs, gathering them like a tail of a horse, and while Saru was not killed in battle, he was out hunting foxes and setting eagles, I fell into a trap!" he lamented. The second was, "I left the Kazakhs without support, without bread, leaving them like wild animals on the open road!" he regretted. The third was, "I was the only one among my four ancestors, with no relatives, no children. If I die, it is not just me, but the lineage of four lives will perish!" he thought. When Kaldan Sherin heard this, his head drooped down: - "I too came alone from four ancestors. This one, too, is like my dear Ejen," he said. Abilay replied: - "Khan Aldiyar, I am your servant." Kaldan Sherin asked: - "What do you mean by that? What has happened to the khan?" Abilay said: - "You compared me to the 'whites of your eyes and the blacks of your eyes' of your child. Would you kill your own child?" Kaldan replied: - "Alright, that is fair." He dismissed the others, taking Abilay aside, placing Ejen on one knee and Abilay on the other, and they began to converse joyfully, discussing "the lame of the foal and the teeth of the foal": - "Are there many sheep among the Kazakhs?" he asked. - "There are many," he replied. Kaldan said: - "The saying goes, 'The sheep are thieves, the shepherds are liars,' and small quarrels do not cease among the households," he remarked. - "Are there many cows among the Kazakhs?" he asked. - "There are many," he replied. Kaldan said: - "The children of the Kazakhs trust in yogurt and are lazy in work," he commented. - "Do the Kazakhs cultivate crops?" he asked. - "No, they do not," he replied. Kaldan said: - "They used to say, 'The land is the mother, and the people are the children.' Without suckling from the land, they do not become attached to it. How many more upheavals will they endure?" he pondered. Would their conversation ever end? Kaldan Sherin gave Topysh, the beauty born of Ayuke, to Abilay, and he bound many who had gained from the Kazakhs to Abilay, returning them as a united people. Kenesary and Nauryzbai's father, Kasym, is born from this Topysh. Topysh's brothers, Kyrgyn and Kush, fled to Abilay for refuge, and their descendants are said to be among the Kalmyks in the Atbasar district, along the Terisakkan river, in the Karakuyin and Kashyrly regions. Many have grown and prospered. We heard these words from the elders of Musa and Sekerbay's time. Now, the history and genealogy of the times seem like mere fabrications to us.
