The captivity of Abilay (Version VI)
The Kalmyk Khan, old Ayuke, sent his only daughter along with forty girls to Kaldan Sherin, saying, "Whoever he gives her to will have power over Kaldan." As winter set in, a Kazakh hunter wandering in the mountains built a house out of stone, and his mounts were camels. He built a stone corral and managed to feed forty-one girls with game meat throughout the winter. Fearing the wrath of Kaldan Sherin, he could not take the girls, nor could he take a wife. When spring arrived, he left. Near the Karakara Valley, in a place called Boktykent, there was a holy site known as "Red Mine," where the Kazakhs would spend the night. They say it was the place where those girls spent the winter. He went to Kaldan Sherin. The girl was exceptionally beautiful. Not wanting to give her to anyone else, Kaldan Sherin took her as a concubine. He had a wife named Karabas, and they had a single son named Ejen. According to Kalmyk law, having two wives was not allowed: "If one takes two wives, the people will be ruined." The girl became pregnant without being a horse rider or a whip wielder. She gave birth to a son. He was born like a spear, and they named him Syna. He was born a hero. This daughter of Ayuke had two daughters and two sons from Kaldan Sherin. The daughters were named Boran and Topysh; the sons were named Kyrgyn and Kush. One moonless dark night, while Kaldan Sherin was standing in the field, something suddenly splashed on him. He took it home, lit a light, and saw it was an arrowhead with a metal tip. The "tip" was likely a special iron that could only be handled by Kaldan Sherin himself. There were ninety craftsmen who made arrows. When he gathered them all and asked, "Which of you made this?" one craftsman replied, "I made it." "Who ordered it made?" he asked. "It was not someone else, but your beloved concubine's firstborn, Syna, who had it made," he said, and after that, he said nothing more. While Syna was sleeping, they made her inhale a drug, rendered her unconscious, and removed the cartilage from her right shoulder blade, then sprinkled her with the white medicine of a bear. After a while, she regained consciousness and lifted her head, not knowing anything. When Syna wanted to shoot an arrow, she felt as if God had struck her from above, and she came home crying like a calf. Her mother asked, "What happened? What did you do?" "I'm healthy, I have no pain or illness. I can't shoot an arrow," she said. "My child, you have been struck. If you move, you will lose your sight, your pupils will be destroyed. Don't get up, you will lose your sight! You cannot survive among the Kalmyks; reach the Kazakhs while you still can," she warned, mentioning Kaldan Sherin's threat. Syna the hero fled and sought refuge with Abilay. Kaldan Sherin, knowing that wherever he went, someone would plot against him, could not find him and, upon hearing that he had sought refuge with Abilay, sent an envoy to Abilay: "Do not fight with me; if you remain peaceful, return Syna to me!" Abilay Khan replied: "There is a saying: 'Even a sparrow hiding in a bush will stay.' If I am not worth even a bush, why should I be alive?" Kaldan Sherin called upon the Kalmyks: "Bring Abilay to me alive!" and sent out a troop called "Suzeq's Hand." At that time, Topysh, the daughter of Ayuke, was gaining fame as a "beauty." "I will give Topysh to whoever brings Abilay alive!" he tempted them. One of the Kalmyk warriors, while hunting in the Ulytau and Kishi Tau mountains, came upon Abilay while he was sleeping. His guard, Tleuimbet, was careless and fell asleep. It is said he was caught because he was not vigilant. When Abilay asked the warriors he encountered about their mission, he learned that they had set out solely for him. Not wanting to bring misfortune to an unsuspecting people, he said: "The Abilay you seek is me." After finding Abilay, who had taken charge of Kaldan's camp, he felt as if he had found his lost foal and continued on. Kaldan Sherin heard that "Abilay is being brought alive." He set up a white yurt in the middle of nowhere. He furnished it like a house for a guest, preparing a bed: "Bring him in there. For seven days and seven nights, do not give him food or water. Let him be hungry and weak! There is a saying: 'Do not ask for wisdom from a man who has been hungry for a day,'" he instructed. As he said, on the eighth day, he commanded: "Bring a leg of mutton with a piece of fat and give it to him." When they brought it and placed it in his hands, he said: "You are something that won't be blown away; if I don't drink, you won't come near my mouth," and he threw the leg towards the door. "Now, four executioners, cool your heads, and all four of you take naked swords: 'The Khan has issued a decree, and provisions have been made. Your guest has arrived. If you do not eat what has been given, here, drink your own blood!'—and let it be known! If he hesitates or panics, behead him! If he is not afraid, if he does not flinch, do not touch him; come back and tell me what he has done," he ordered. When they reached Kaldan Sherin's command and did as he instructed, they found Abilay sitting confidently, saying: "Only God can take my life." "Does he not have a soul? Would a living being not be afraid?" they returned. They reported what they had seen and heard. "If shot, no bullet will penetrate; if struck, no sword will cut; if thrown into water, he will not sink; if thrown into fire, he will not burn; he is made of steel on the outside and iron on the inside. He has passed two tests. Now let us try one more; summon him to this yurt," they said. The third test was as follows: Kaldan Sherin had ninety guards. He had them all seated in a row around the house. He himself descended from the throne and sat among them as one of the guards. He left no space for anyone to sit from the entrance to the threshold: "And when you enter, do not bump into each other or offer your seats," he instructed. Kaldan Sherin had a throne made of stone, intended solely for the Khan himself. When Abilay Khan entered, the throne was empty. There was no one on it, just a stone figure resembling a deity. Upon entering the house, without looking around, he saw the throne empty and went straight to it, sitting in Kaldan Sherin's place. After sitting next to the "deity," the Kalmyks began to murmur. Then Abilay said: "Good people contend for a good seat; the bad lose their place. Am I not a bad person who would lose my place? This place belonged to Kaldan Sherin. His fortune has fled, and my spirit has taken over. The throne is a place for a Khan. If the Kalmyk Khan Kaldan Sherin does not sit here, and if the Kazakh Khan Abilay Khan does not sit here, will the devil sit here?" The Kalmyks looked at each other: "What can we say to him? 'The shameless contend for noble words.' If the seat is lost, let it be lost; let not honor be lost," they said. Kaldan Sherin realized he had been outsmarted: "O Abilay, where is Seru?" he asked. "Seru did not say he was Seru, nor did he say he would not cut," Abilay replied. Kaldan Sherin could not respond to that. "I have been caught; I have become a mere mortal!" he thought. "I killed Seru in battle. When you sent word to the Kalmyks, I informed the Muslim people, and Seru did not die in battle but was caught while sleeping, like stolen livestock! If I die, I am the only one left from four generations; I have no children. If I am not the only one, it means the lineage of four souls has perished," he lamented, and Kaldan Sherin's head drooped in sorrow: "I too was a newcomer like you... This is my Ejen, my little one." Abilay said, "Aladiar Khan, I bow to you." Kaldan Sherin replied, "What have you gained that you are so happy?" Abilay said, "You compared me to your child, who is as dear to you as your own eyes. Will you kill your child?" Kaldan replied, "Alright, fair enough." He dismissed the others, keeping Abilay alone, placing Ejen on one knee and Abilay on the other, and they engaged in friendly banter, discussing "the lame in the herd and the teeth in the meat," until they asked: "Are there many sheep among the Kazakhs?" "Yes, many," he replied. Kaldan said: "There is a saying: 'Sheep are thieves, shepherds are liars,' so there is always minor conflict among the households!" "Are there many cows among the Kazakhs?" he asked. "Yes, many," he replied. Kaldan said: "The children of the Kazakhs rely on sour milk and are lazy in labor; they are foolish," he remarked. "Do the Kazakhs cultivate crops?" he asked. "No," he replied. Kaldan said: "A human being cannot cultivate crops without embracing the earth's breast; they will still face many upheavals," he said. Their conversation seemed endless, and Abilay gave Topysh, the daughter of Ayuke, to Abilay, binding many who had prospered and grown from the Kazakhs' past to him, returning them like a migrating people. Kenesary and Nauryzbai, the sons of Qasim, are born from this (Topysh) beauty. After that, the Kalmyk Kaldan Sherin, being hostile, did not let him rest, and he blinded his only son Ejen, taking away his sight and leaving him in complete darkness. After that, the Kalmyks did not prosper. The saying "The Khan was captured by the Kalmyks; thus, the Kalmyks did not prosper" refers to this. The brothers of Topysh—Kyrgyn and Kush—fled to Abilay for refuge, and their descendants are said to be among the Kalmyks in the Atbasar district, along the Terisakkan River, in the Karakuyin and Kashyrly regions. They have grown into many people. Abilay Khan had sent them to the Kalmyks, saying, "Do not let Topysh, Kyrgyn, and Kush come this way." While they were here, their children were left among the Kazakhs and grew up under the Kalmyk name. After Abilay Khan, they could not live among the Kalmyks anymore and migrated here, becoming servants to the nobles, growing up as "Töleñgit" among the Kanjygal.
