Ablai and the Russian Envoys (Version II)
Koylybay is the son of Shagyray, the wealthy shepherd. When his father was a wealthy shepherd, thirty Russians came as envoys from the Tsar to Abilay Khan. After the snow fell and winter set in, he asked: – Who among you will host these thirty guests without distinguishing one from another, keeping them safe and sound throughout the winter? – to which Koylybay replied: – If they wish to stay with us for their lifetime, let it be so, – and on a blessed day, he slaughtered a black-and-white sheep to host them, ensuring they did not go hungry or suffer during the winter. After going to the Tsar, when asked: – What is the greatest gift among the Kazakh people? – he was told: – It is "orphan" in Kazakh tradition, – and so a girl was sent to Koylybay, along with a friendship letter written on dog skin in gold. From that girl, he had two sons, one named Maltabar and the other Koshzheter. The descendants of these two boys have grown and formed their own community today, known as the "Russian village." This is the reason for the name "Russian village." On the banks of the Terisakhan, below Tasbeket, are the villages of Taki Hajy. Tileuqabil mırza had five sons: Adil, Edil, Elemes, Zhamankara, and Sheshenkara. – When I die, I will have sixty daughters-in-law mourn for me, – he said, and he arranged marriages for both Kalmyks and Kyrgyz, as well as for the Shurshits, increasing his wealth and reviving his lineage. He died at the age of ninety-three, and sixty daughters-in-law mourned for him. Today, most of Tileuqabil's descendants are Kalmyks, Sart, Kyrgyz, and Shurshits, with very few true Kazakhs. Wealth has fled from Tileuqabil mırza's own lineage. This is because the daughters of Zhamankara and Sheshenkara were married off with a "puppet" wedding, slaughtering a mare for the celebration. They made clothes for the "puppet" from the golden papers sent by the Tsar. They sold a pure white mare, saying: "Let our meat be white," and they bathed in the milk of the white mare. Those girls were married off to the children of Baiyzaq and Janzak, the first wives of Akiis, Qalkaman, and Bulanbay. The wealth of Bulanbay has been turned into poetry: My father's name is Shagyray, my name is Baldai, Bulanbay's horses are as black as a mountain. I have a dambal (a type of traditional garment) made of shiquty on my legs, If you can, bite it, Karakalpak! In ancient times, the wealthy would dress their daughters in dambals made from shiquty. In times of war, if someone was forced to work, the dambal was a reliable item that would not hinder them if they needed to work over it. The horses mentioned, "like Bulanbay, Bulanbay's horses are as black as a mountain," would come to the Karagaily hill outside Ereyimen, leaving their blood and lineage there, and the shod bay would not return. The granddaughters of Tileuqabil mırza who married into wealthy families like Bulanbay were seen by the people to have become beggars, carrying burdens on their backs in their old age. It affected both fortunes. Those who heard and knew about the strange fate of the once-great wealth in their youth said: – Whatever happens to you, there is no shame, – and they would poke him with a stick. The beginning of the world is there, the end is here. We have spoken of Kulyk Baygana mırzalığı in the Kulyk genealogy. Kanjyghaly Tolegen mırza was taking six camels loaded with kumys to a feast. In the spring, when moving from the mountains, he would leave forty camels behind at his winter pasture. To test his mırzalığı, he would stop for guests left behind during the journey, tie up his mare, slaughter a young camel, and cook the meat in the mare's milk. Karakesek Baymurin mırza, Akbura Karkynbay mırza, and Karzhaz Myrzagul's son Tati mırza. The deeds of these mentioned mırzas are all foreign and strange. In our time, the most renowned mırza was Tobaqty Qunanbay. We spoke of his mırzalığı as a single narrative. The one who showed mırzalıq to the clergy, scholars, and healers was Shormanuly Musa. For the sake of God, on the path of God, holding God above himself, the mırza was Jangir, the grandson of Qongyrqulja. All of these are not for boasting, but for truth. There may be those who show mırzalıq for boasting, not for truth. Their actions are like the fast of the Russians. I have not seen anyone like Kulyk Akimbek's son or like Karakesek, who is of the lineage of Qozha Qurban Qozha Yusuf (Joseph) since my childhood until today.
