Abilai's Campaign Against the Kyrgyz and Uzbeks (Version II)
64. Abilai's Campaign Against the Kyrgyz and Uzbeks (Version II) During the time of Khan Abilai, a Kyrgyz named Sadyrbala emerged and boasted while fully displaying his white cap: – I have defeated Alibek the Short, Qazy Mambek, Kökjal Barak, and the one-eyed Qarqaq. I have raided the Kazakhs seven times in a year. They say there is an old Sart named Abilai in Arqa. What can he do to me? – he said. Upon hearing this, Khan Abilai set out with his army. There was a famous and powerful man among the Kyrgyz named Aiteke Jyryq, who had six sons. That time, they faced a massacre, and in the end, Khan Abilai and Sadyrbala made peace and agreed to give one Kyrgyz household with a "white house" to each side. It is said that the entire tribe called "Säru Kyrgyz" was given. To this day, there are Kyrgyz living in Akmolinsk and Semey regions who are descendants of those Kyrgyz who gained spoils during Abilai's time. While he was the Khan of the nomadic Kazakhs, he sent tax collectors to the Khans of Turkistan and Tashkent to gather taxes. He allied with the Shürshits and sent his eldest son, Adil Törä, to the left side to say, "Rule over the Kazakhs and Kalmyks!" – and to this day, his descendants have thrived on that side. * * * Once Khan Abilai felt completely at ease, he said: "This is my ancestral land. I will take Bukhara," and gathered the brave warriors of the three hundred Kazakhs, saying, "You stand, I will lead." After departing, he first went to Turkistan and appointed his beloved son, Sydyk Sultan, to govern there. He went to Shymkent and Sayram and appointed a Sart named Abdolrahman there. He went to Tashkent and appointed another Sart named Myrzakhmet. Tashkent was governed by a Myrzakhmet during the time the Russians were about to take it. This Myrzakhmet grew old and died recently, while the one appointed by Abilai had passed away long before. After that, while raiding over Sozak, a rich man's daughter in the Konyrat region gave birth to a son and named him "Abilai." This Abilai also grew and became a tribe. Khan Abilai then passed through and stopped at the Juphar sanctuary, facing the city of Samarkand. That night, he said to the elder beside him: – See a sign tonight! – – I will not just sit idle; you are the ruling Khan, you see too, – the elder replied. The next morning, the elder and the Khan sat together and shared what they had seen. First, the Khan spoke: – Last night in my dream, a tiger came and lay down in front of my tent, not raising its head but lowering it. I thought, "What does this mean?" and looked, and the tiger turned into a bear. "It was a tiger before, how did it become a bear?" I looked again, and it became a wolf. It did not stop there; it turned into a fox. It did not stop there; it became a hare or a corsac, something like that... Suddenly, I woke up, – he said. Then the elder said: – If I tell you what I saw, the entire assembly of saints in Bukhara came and lay down at the foot of the Samarkand gate. It came to say, "I will not let you take Samarkand." The tiger you saw is your fortune. The place where your fortune has reached its peak is here. From now on, your fortune will not rise. Do not fall into the reputation of "Abilai has died at the Sart" and do not quarrel or fight; just return quietly from here! The bear you saw represents the era of your last child. There will be an "era of bears." The bear will pass through. Then the wolf you saw represents the era of your grandchildren; there will be a "wolf era." The wolf will pass through. Then the fox you saw represents the era of your great-grandchildren; there will be a "fox era." The fox will walk around and save its life. Then the hare you saw represents the era after that; it will hop around like a hare, protecting its life. As for what the era after that will be, only the Almighty knows. It may be a corsac, a marten, or at the very least, a mouse, a frog, a scorpion, or an ant, and thus the world will come to an end, – he said. After that, the Khan listened to the elder's words and sent an envoy to the city of Samarkand: – I have no quarrel or war; I have come to visit the saints. I will return from here! – he said. The people of Samarkand and Bukhara were frightened. Previously, the Kazakhs had taken those cities with an army of thirteen Khans. Saying "the army has become Kazakh" would bring suffering to the worldly Sarts. After hearing this from Khan Abilai, the people of Samarkand rejoiced and came to present gifts to the Khan. At that time, Khan Abilai said: – I will take stones from Samarkand's blue stone to make a headstone for myself and to inscribe writings, – and he gathered craftsmen to quarry stones. Then the people of Samarkand, seeing the stone that brought good fortune to Abilai, asked the Khan for a reward: – This stone has not been found by anyone since Amir Timur, – they said. On that stone, they inscribed his name for the craftsmen: "Abilai ibn Süyenishkhan." After returning from that journey, he came to Tashkent and took Myrzakhmet's daughter as his wife: – Now there will be no more wars, – he said, granting permission to the heroes of the Middle and Lesser Juzes to return to their lands and waters. Three months later, he set out from Tashkent towards Arqa. He had several Tölengits and representatives of the Üysin and Dulat tribes with him. Hearing this, the Sart Abdolrahman in Shymkent gathered Töbet Sultan, the farmers from Rabat, Karabulak, and the Jangak farmers from Yangkent, and formed an army to surround Khan Abilai. At that time, the Dulat people fled and were called "general Dulat." They had little skill other than drinking boza and cursing, and they wiped out a significant number of the Khan's Tölengits, who were weak from the strength of the unsalted soup. They did not dare to touch the Khan himself. At that time, the Khan stood by the river Arys, on top of a hill, regretting having dispersed his companions and biting his finger. Then an elder said: – You have been a leader since ancient times, You have been a nation since long ago, There is no one from the Middle Juz! The tip of your spear is golden, There is no one from the Lesser Juz, You have nothing to do but watch, – he said. Then Abilai descended to a fortress by the Arys River and passed away on a Friday at the age of sixty-eight, and that place is now called "Khan Qorgany." His body was taken to the mausoleum of Hazrat Sultan Algharfine in the city of Turkistan, placed in a tomb. It was a Friday when the news was heard in Saryarka forty days before. They gathered in the yurt, saying, "Today is the fortieth day." Afterward, when those around him came and asked, "On what day did he die?" it turned out he died on the day the news was heard at home. The news of his death had reached Arqa forty days before he died. When Khan Abilai died, in the town of Sozak, Jalang Ayyak Azder cried for three days and three nights. The surrounding Sarts and commoners said: – Master, why are you so upset over the death of one Kazakh? – they asked. – The great Abilai did not die in Saryarka but in the fortress of the Sarts! Now the khanship remains in the fortress, and that is why I cry, – he replied. As he said, after that, there was no khanship among the Kazakhs, and the Sarts took over. He took an ox for five sheep, You would say it was free. He sowed crops and millet, You would say it was a blessing. He called the barefoot Sarts, You would say they were my lords, – said Mönke Bi, who came from the Nogai, and he stood there. After that, the era of "the chick to your head, the sparrow to your side" began. In the places of the old times of Bukharak, where it was said, "they build cities, the Russians take," it was built during the time of Khan Abilai's grandson Kenesary.
