Abilai's Campaign (Version II)
When Abilay Khan gathered his forces and marched towards the Karakalpak Khatysban, it is said that he sent a messenger to Abilay: – Our dispute is not about religion, but about wealth, – he said, – let us not slaughter our people for the sake of wealth! I will find a warrior from among the Kalmyks to fight me. Let Abilay also find someone from his own people. If my warrior defeats Abilay's warrior, let him take the spoils of wealth and life, and we will take the loot. If Abilay's warrior defeats mine, I will renounce wealth and life. Let him take the spoils, – he said, – if this is the agreement, then my agreement is the same. – Alright, let it be, – he replied. There was a well-known Kalmyk warrior who could grab a tiger by the tail and throw it. He could also hold it by the tail and slam it to the ground to kill it. He was known for his great strength. Abilay did not have such a tested warrior. According to his own judgment, he decided to send Zhanibek, the grandson of Shakshak: – Tomorrow, you will face the Kalmyk warrior! – he said. That night, Zhanibek had a dream and woke up startled, deciding to return to his people, thinking, “I should tell Abilay Khan.” When he arrived, Abilay noticed that Zhanibek had woken up frightened from his dream and thought, “He won’t leave without coming to me!” and sat up. As dawn was breaking, it was the time when things were becoming visible: – Hero, did you come early? Are you in a hurry about something? – he asked. – Your Excellency, I had a bad dream. I am afraid of that dream. I thought, “If I die this time, I will leave without descendants!” and I was preparing to return, so I came to you, – he said, – “I might die!” my heart was in my throat, I barely made it here, – he said. Then the Khan called for his horseman, and the horseman: – Aldiyar, Your Excellency! – he came running. – Bring my old bay horse that Bogenbay gave me to the front of the door! – he said. It is said that the Khan could not ride any other horse. When the horseman brought the horse to the door, he said to Zhanibek: – Stretch out your hand, – he said. Zhanibek stretched out his hand and said, “Ameen,” and when he jumped up, the Khan said: – A sacrifice for a good dream, a sacrifice for a bad dream, – he said, – O God, whatever I interpret this dream to be, accept it! – and he had the bay horse slaughtered immediately as a “dream sacrifice” and distributed it. – Now tell me your dream, – he said. – If I tell my dream, Your Excellency, a certain noble from the Kalmyks came out for a duel. I came out from this side. When we were about to clash, he speared me down. He was about to mount me and cut my throat. When I looked at my chest, a dragon snake was sucking my right breast. And another dragon snake was also sucking that breast. When I woke up startled, it was just a dream. This is what I saw, Your Excellency! – he said. Then the Khan interpreted: – Ah, my son, why are you afraid of this? – he said, – your dream is a good one. Can there be a better dream than this?! His initial interpretation was as follows: – In your dream, if he speared you down, in reality, you will spear him down (he said), – and if he mounted you in your dream, in reality, you will mount him, – he said, – if he prepared a sword for your throat in your dream, in reality, you will prepare a sword for his throat, – he said, – the dragon snake sucking your right breast is your own born and raised child. He will grow up to be a dragon-like figure, – he said, – he will become a hero, – he said, – and if that dragon has sucked your breast, you will give birth to a daughter. The grandchild born from her will also be a dragon, – he said, – he will roar like a dragon when born, – he said, – your offspring from a son and your grandchild from a daughter will be born riding a steed and holding a banner. You are destined to grow and prosper, – he said, – how can you die, enter the duel! – he said, – may the dreams of Prophet Yusuf, Yunus, and Prophet Yakub be with you! – he said. After the Khan interpreted the dream as if it were written in his hand, and after having the horse slaughtered, Zhanibek's fear disappeared, his heart swelled, and his strength and power exceeded what it was before. He called for his horse and mounted it: – Duel! Duel! – he shouted and charged out. The noble of the Kalmyks, losing his composure, stumbled as he stepped, not knowing how to wield his spear, panicked and hesitated as they were about to clash. Zhanibek the hero speared him down, mounted him, and before he could touch his throat with the sword, the Kalmyk noble lay on his back and said: – Oh, stop, – he said, – last night you and I both had dreams! I had you under my feet! – he said, – your dream interpreter was better than mine. Because of the good interpretation, you have reached this level, – he said, – my dream interpreter could not say anything right and you have taken me down! – he said. Then Zhanibek, not wanting to behead him, came down from above and led him to Abilay Khan. He was a person of great lineage, with eleven villages. Without touching those eleven villages, he plundered the other Kalmyks, leaving them completely naked, and took the loot. “If a Khan is to be, let him be like this!” they say.
