Abilai's Campaign to Samarkand (Version I)
Ablai Khan, after coming to himself freely, declared, "I will take my ancestral land of Bukhara," and gathered the brave warriors of the three zhuz (hordes) of the Kazakhs, saying, "You stand, I will lead." First, he went to Turkestan and appointed his son, Sydyk Sultan, to govern there. He then went to Shymkent and Sayram, where he placed a merchant named Abd al-Rahman in charge. Upon reaching Tashkent, he appointed another merchant named Myrzakhamet. This Myrzakhamet ruled Tashkent at the time when the Russians were about to take it. This Myrzakhamet, having grown old and gone mad, recently passed away. The Myrzakhamet appointed by Ablai had died long before this. After that, while he was resting in Sozak, a wealthy man's daughter from the Konyrat people gave birth to a son and named him Ablai. This Ablai also grew up and became the leader of a tribe. Ablai Khan then passed through and arrived at the Juphar sanctuary near the city of Samarkand. That night, he said to the elder beside him: – "Tonight, I saw a dream!" – "I will not just lie here, you are the ruler of the people, you see it yourself!" the elder replied. The next morning, the elder and the Khan sat together and discussed their dreams. First, the Khan said: – "Last night, in my dream, a tiger came and lay down in front of my tent, not lifting its head, but lowering it and lying down. I wondered, 'What is this?' and when I looked, the tiger turned into a bear. 'It was a tiger just now, how did it become a bear?' I thought, and then it turned into a wolf. It did not stop there; it transformed into something like a rabbit or a hare, and at that moment, I woke up," he said. Then the elder said: – "If I tell you what I saw, the entire assembly of saints in Bukhara came and lay down at the foot of the Samarkand gate. It came to tell you that it will not let you take Samarkand. The tiger you saw is your fate. The place where your fate has reached its peak is here. From now on, your fortune will not rise. You will not encounter the title of 'Ablai has died from the merchant' from long ago, so do not fight or quarrel, just quietly return from here. The bear you saw represents the era of your descendants after you, which will be called the 'bear era.' They will pass through like a bear. Then, the wolf you saw represents the era of your grandchildren, which will be called the 'wolf era.' They will pass through like wolves. Then, the fox you saw represents the era of your great-grandchildren, which will be called the 'fox era.' They will survive by moving stealthily. Then, the rabbit you saw represents the era after that, which will be like rabbits, hiding and surviving. What will happen after that, only the Almighty knows. It could be a hare, a marten, or in the end, a mouse, a frog, a scorpion, or an ant, and thus the world will perish," he said. After that, the Khan listened to these words and sent an envoy to the city of Samarkand: – "I have no quarrel or war. I have come to visit the saints. I will return from here," he said. The people of Samarkand and Bukhara were afraid. Previously, the Kazakhs had taken thirteen royal cities. When it was said that the Kazakhs had come, it would bring trouble to the worldly merchants. After hearing this from Ablai Khan, the people of Samarkand rejoiced and came to see the Khan with gifts, and Ablai Khan then said: "I will take stones from the blue stone of Samarkand to engrave my name!" He gathered craftsmen and had stones quarried. The people of Samarkand saw the stone that Ablai had chosen and asked for a reward from the Khan: "This stone has not been quarried by anyone since Amir Timur," they said. They had his name inscribed on that stone: "Ablai ibn Suenish Khan." After returning from that journey, he came to Tashkent, took Myrzakhamet's daughter, and declared, "Now there will be no war or conflict," allowing the heroes of the Middle and Lesser Zhuz to return to their lands and waters. Three months later, he set out from Tashkent towards the Steppe. He had a number of followers from the Tole and the Yusyn and Dulat tribes with him. Hearing this, Abd al-Rahman from Shymkent gathered the farmers from Turbat, Sultanrabat, Karabulak, and Mangkent and formed an army to surround Ablai Khan. At that time, the Dulat people fled and were called "the Dulat with long skirts." They had little skill other than drinking boza and were a weak people, having been exhausted by the strength of a tasteless soup. They killed many of the Khan's followers. They did not dare to touch the Khan himself. The Khan, standing on a hill by the Arys River, regretted having sent his companions away and chewed his fingers. Then an elder said: – "You have had a people from the past, From the Middle Zhuz, there is no one. The tip of your spear is gold, From the Lesser Zhuz, there is no one. Looking at this, You have no other business," he said. After that, Ablai descended to a fortress by the Arys River and passed away on a Friday at the age of sixty-eight, and that place is now called "Khan's Fortress." His body was taken and placed in the dome of the revered Sultan Algharfine in the city of Turkestan. The day of mourning was on a Friday. It was heard in Saryarka forty days before. They gathered in the yurt, saying, "Today is the fortieth," and the children and families gathered to hear the news on Friday. Later, when those around him came, they asked, "On what day did he die?" They said he died on the day they heard the news at home. The news that he died forty days before his death had reached the Steppe. When Ablai Khan died in the town of Sozak, the barefoot Adurdur [Ashdur, Azder E.Q.] wept for three days and three nights. The surrounding merchants asked: – "Master, why are you so upset over the death of one Kazakh?" He replied: – "The great Ablai did not die in Saryarka, but in the merchant's fortress! Now the khanate remains in the fortress. That is why I weep," he said. As he said, after that, there was no khan in the Kazakh community, and the merchants took over. The saying of the Nogai Mönke Bi came true: "Five sheep for an ox, You would say it is free, To sow crops and millet, You would say it is a burden, Barefoot merchants, You would say they are my lords," After that, the era of "the chick to its own head, the eagle to its own" began. In the times of my ancestors, in the places where Bukhara's "they build cities, the Russians take" was said, during the time of Ablai Khan's grandson Kenesary, it was built, and Kenesary and Nauryzbai, like thieves, wandered around, and with a group of young men not reaching two thousand, they fought here and there, and for eight years, even if they were in one village, they were called khan. Erey and Esil have become mountains, There are many infidels, few Muslims, they have become a crowd. Sarjan and Konyrkuzha have become in-laws, The Russians and Kenesary have become enemies. When the cattle lie down on the pasture, There is no poverty for the young man when he is healthy. No bird that flies, no animal that runs could escape, When the Russians and Kenesary became enemies," as stated in the poems of the former poets.
